What the Hell Just Happened?

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 5, 2012

A whirlwind day that started with Butch Davis and moved with near “certainty” to Mike Gundy ended with Bret Bielema as the new Arkansas Razorbacks football coach. The only universal truth associated with this hire is its shock value. The former Wisconsin head coach was never on anyone’s radar. And now he’s in Fayetteville, tasked with quickly righting the ship of what was once the nation’s fastest moving program. Of all the annoying tendencies employed by national writers, I found one theme pissed me off more than any other today. Many scoffed at Arkansas, calling this a “middling SEC program” or “middle of the pack” job. While 2012 was an obvious disappointment, the 2010 and 2011 seasons produced 21 wins and back-to-back Top Ten finishes. While Arkansas is not Alabama, it aint Ole Miss either.

While the hire certainly turned heads, there is no consensus about this being a “great” hire. The chattering class ranges from standing ovation praise to outright dismissal. I had a hard time getting my head around the move earlier today. After some perspective and a little reaserch, I’m firmly of the opinion that Jeff Long made a very strong hire. Bielema plays big boy football, puts linemen in the NFL regularly, and has the arrogance highly successful coaches need. Look at him, then look at his wife. Tell me that isn’t a guy that knows how to win big with fewer tools than his competitors.

Let’s take a look back at what others have been saying.

Yahoo! Sports – Pat Forde (who broke the story)

It will be an interesting fit for Bielema, who has spent his entire playing and coaching career in the midwest. He was a nose guard at Iowa and an assistant coach at Iowa and Kansas State before moving to Madison. But clearly Long was less worried about getting someone with Southern ties than he was getting someone with an established winning record.

ESPN – Chris Low

But when it comes to coaching and developing hard-nosed football teams committed to running the ball and playing sound defense, Bielema has cornered the market on that brand of football in the Big Ten.

It just so happens to be the same brand that wins championships in the SEC.

CBS Sports – Tom Fornelli

As for what this means for Arkansas, the Razorbacks are getting a coach who’s a proven winner. It’s not often that coaches with three consecutive conference titles in a BCS conference are available for the taking, but Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long pulled it off. Considering the way things have gone in Fayetteville over the last year from the Bobby Petrino embarrassment to the John L. Smith disaster, things couldn’t have played out any better for the school.

Sports Illustrated – Andy Staples

Bielema can succeed at Arkansas. If he can keep the future Darren McFaddens and Tyler Wilsons in state and then pluck the rest of his roster from Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida — bringing along current Wisconsin assistant Charlie Partridge would do wonders in the Sunshine State — the Razorbacks can be competitive in college football’s toughest division. At Wisconsin, the former Iowa defensive lineman identified diamonds in the rough and put tough, disciplined teams on the field. If he continues to prefer an offense that lines up and hands off and then uses play action to set up the pass, then he’ll fit right in with Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Florida

College Football News – Pete Fiutak

Can Bielema go into a living room and get a kid to turn down Saban, Les Miles, and Will Muschamp? Maybe, but he has yet to prove he can beat the powerhouse salesman.

The Arkansas Head Coaching Search–How Others See Us

Posted by Adam Butler on November 26, 2012

Yahoo! columnist Pat Forde appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and made some interesting comments (3:13 on the audio) about the College Football head coaching vacancy pecking order.

Hint: It was a pleasant surprise. Maybe even more surprising was the fact that CBS’ Tim Brando (a perennial Hog Hater since his pal. the Former Mississippi Coach, was canned by Arkansas) expressed similar thoughts about the UA vacancy today on Sports Talk With Bo Mattingly.

As of now, I would rank them (in terms of attractiveness):

1. Arkansas

2. Tennessee

3. Auburn

4. Colorado

5. Cal

6. NC State

7. Purdue

8. Kentucky

9. Boston College

Turning the Page

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 12, 2012

As promised yesterday afternoon on our Facebook page (that you should go “Like” if you haven’t already), we have officially stopped crying in our beer. It’s time to look ahead to the game this weekend – contrary to what you may infer by media reports, Alabama has not been preemptively awarded a win – which means anything can happen. And, boy, don’t we know it. Put in a hopeful way, if ULM can beat Arkansas then Arkansas can beat Alabama. At least in theory that is true. We’ll look at how that may happen later in the week.

Predictably the press believes the Razorbacks have no chance of beating Alabama this weekend. Vegas agrees: Bama opened this week as a 13-point favorite, and the line now has grown to 22 points at some books. With most of the talking heads turning their attention to the coming weekend, here is a sample of what you can expect to hear in the next 3 days. It’s not too bad, actually, but not too hopeful either. And for the record, I believe Pat Forde is the best college football writer working today – even when I don’t agree with him. I think Erik Kuselias can hold his own, too, although I see him as more of a NFL guru.

Breaking sports news video. MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL highlights and more.

If Tyler Wilson cannot go, the general belief is that Arkansas is DOA this Saturday afternoon. I have a different take on that and will explain myself in the next day or two. Suffice it to say for now, if gambling was legal, I’d put down a few bucks on the Hogs to cover. I may even take a flier on a money-line bet to win.

Forde Time

Posted by Brett Kincaid on November 1, 2011

He’s back.  My main man Pat Forde has emerged from the darkness (aka The Mothership) and landed in a great place for a real journalist like himself - Yahoo! Sports.  It’s very, very surprising that this happened during the football season.  Forde covers college basketball and horse racing, but college football is his A Game.  He’s as good as anyone at covering the sport week in and week out.  ESPN’s loss is our gain as Forde will now have the freedom to cover and comment without influence and intimidation from his Mickey Mouse bosses.  I’ll let Forde explain:

In keeping with the times, The Dash Board of Directors (membership total: one) gave itself permission in mid-October to explore other options in terms of Internet affiliation. The Dash received interest from Yahoo! Sports. After careful consideration, The Dash applied for membership and was accepted by the worldwide leader in sports journalism.

Also from this week’s Forde Yard Dash (speaking of key November games):

Arkansas at LSU (22), Nov. 25. The Razorbacks received two unearned fourth-quarter gifts from Vanderbilt Saturday – a fumbled handoff that turned a Commodores touchdown into a 94-yard return for score the other way, and a missed 26-yard field goal to tie. That says more about the historic misery of Vandy than the prowess of the Hogs, but the bottom line is that their inglorious escape in Nashville keeps major goals alive. This has been a sizzling series in recent years, with the last six meetings decided by eight points or less.

A Dash of Bowl Seasoning

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 16, 2010

My main man Pat Forde dropped his annual Forde Yard Dash through the bowl season.  Unfortunately I had a similar idea for my own bowl rundown, so it’s back to the drawing board for me.  This seems like a perfect segue to…

Don’t forget to sign up for the 2nd Annual Bowl Mania challenge.  Take five minutes to pick your winners and rank them in order of your confidence level.  The winner gets a huge, huge prize: a feature in “At the BlogHawg Offices” in January.  This is a huge step up from last year, when we gave out an autographed photo of his eyebrows.  Games kick off this weekend, so time is running out!

Oh…and what does Forde think of our Hogs?

Moderately Useful Dash Fact: Neither team has lost since mid-October, although Arkansas has played the stiffer competition in that time. The Razorbacks’ defense has been successful at putting pressure on the passer, but that could be dangerous against an accomplished scrambler like Pryor. Whichever star quarterback plays best could well decide the outcome.

Dash Pick: Arkansas 23, Ohio State 20.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Notes from College Football

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 1, 2010

Happy New College Football Year's Eve!

The BlogHawgs are grinding away today, trying to get our actual work done before checking out for a long weekend of football.  Apologies for the lack of posting today… We’ll pick it back up tomorrow.

To satisfy your cravings in advance of tomorrow night’s kickoff, here are a few good stories from around the college football world today.

My man Pat Forde is back with his weekly feature, The Forde Yard Dash.  This is a must-read every week for college football fans.

Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com details his list of Week 1 teams & coaches with a lot to gain … and a lot to lose this weekend.

College Football News has started their weekly “Fearless Predictions” columns, a regular staple of the college football diet.  In this one they breakdown Monday night’s “Game of the Year” between Boise and Va Tech.  Not good news for us Bronco Believers

Arkansas to the Cotton Bowl has been a popular bowl projection here in the pres-season. CBSSports.com likes the Hogs to Dallas with Bama and Ohio St. in the BCS Championship Game.

The Big Ten has its own version of “The Decision” tonight on ESPN.  The counting-challenged league will announce the two divisions they will assign the 12 teams for next football season.  Prepare for gnashing of teeth when Ohio St. and Michigan are assigned to different divisions.

Enjoy…  We’re about 27 hours from kickoff to the 2010 season, folks!
