Jersey? Sure!

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 6, 2012

Acceptable

Anyone that reads our work with any degree of regularity knows that we genuinely enjoy making fun of grown men wearing jerseys. A simple rule exists: If you are old enough to vote and are not playing in the game, leave the jersey at home. Better yet, leave it in the store. I have never quite understood the phenomenon, but then again I’ve never spent any time trying to understand it. The only exception to this rule is for a woman to wear a jersey. In such cases, she is not bound to only wear them at games. She can wear a jersey wherever she damn well pleases.

Apparently Drew Magary at Deadspin.com disagrees. At least he’s funny about it, leading me to believe that he wears his jersey ironically and not because he’s about to turn Bob Deniro in The Fan. From Magary:

NFL fans walk around in team jerseys all the time, and even though most of them look like schlubs, most of them FEEL better than they do at any other time of the week. In fact, the fatter and more out of shape you are, the more powerful a spell the jersey casts over your ego. Maybe you look like a real player. Maybe the head coach will be in dire need of a running back in the fourth quarter, see you through the TV screen, and summon you out to the field to go rip off the winning 90-yard swing pass. That will never happen, but the jersey is what lets you dream about it, and often the dream is vivid enough to make a decent substitute for reality. Which is good, because in reality you’re fat and your team sucks.

Even if you think having a healthy sense of humor about wearing your jersey is cool, remember that no one

Unacceptable

can see your sense of humor. All we see is you wearing a jersey. In this case we are laughing at you and not with you. So please do us all a favor and leave the Tyler Wilson replica jersey-wearing to the kids.

As an aside, it’s probably a good idea to Just Say No to the fannypack, too. I don’t care if it’s convenient. You look like an imbecile.

Can you hear me now?

Posted by Brett Kincaid on January 17, 2012

Coach said WHAT?! (Allegedly)

According to allegations made by former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley, the KC brass had no problem hearing what Haley said.  The Kansas City Star got a helluva scoop this weekend, citing comments from Haley that claimed his former bosses bugged his offices and tapped his phones.  Peter King, for my money the gold standard of NFL reporting, takes a look at the allegations in his Monday Morning Quarterback column.

King properly points out that Haley better produce evidence – fast:

If he has proof or something more than simple paranoia, out with it — and expose the team for something incredibly scurrilous. If not, that’s a damaging rap to lay on someone, or an organization. Haley needs to set the record straight.

If Haley ever wants to be a head coach in the NFL again, he better clear this up immediately.  His overall lack of productivity on the field coupled with his abrasive personality may prevent that no matter what happens in Kansas City.  But making criminal allegations against team officials creates a whole new ballgame.  If Haley is wrong, he could be out of coaching at the NFL level for good.

One for the Road

Posted by Brett Kincaid on January 6, 2012

As Mr. Tony is fond of saying on his radio program and PTI, we bid a melancholy happy trails to 17 seniors on the Arkansas Razorback football team.  We spent some time on this subject in November when these Hogs played their final game in Arkansas, and it hits home tonight.  Never again will we get to see Joe Adams, Jake Bequette, Jarius Wright, or Greg Childs run onto the field while wearing that beautiful Razorback on their helmets.  With these Razorback heroes and the rest of their classmates, we have known all year it would come to a sudden end after bowl season.  We have enjoyed – even savored – their play this season, wishing it could last forever while understanding it could not.

These upperclassmen could be joined by a half dozen Razorback juniors, leaving Fayetteville in hopes of making a living playing the game they love.  For these Hogs, most fans have not spent the season soaking up every memory, believing we had another season of thrills and chills to enjoy.  Unfortunately, I believe we will say an unexpected farewell to at least two key Razorbacks one year earlier than we all planned.

The most unusual early entrant may be Knile Davis, the 2010 SEC rushing champion that missed the 2011 campaign thanks to a broken ankle.  The junior (Davis technically remains classified as a junior, although he is eligible for a redshirt season) has submitted his name to the NFL draft board.  Underclassmen routinely do this in an attempt to get some feedback from personnel officials in the NFL.  This feedback helps guide these young men in their decision-making process for leaving early or returning to college.  Davis clearly has NFL talent, but one must wonder whether he can stay healthy enough for an NFL team to take a gamble.  Despite that obvious concern, Davis has made a few cryptic quotes that lead us to believe his days in Fayetteville may already come to an end.

Defensive end Tenarius “Tank” Wright has also asked to be evaluated by NFL scouts.  Like Davis, Wright suffered through injury his junior season but managed to play in half the games after suffering a broken wrist at Alabama.  Like his bookend Bequette, Wright looks and plays like an NFL defensive lineman/outside linebacker.  He appears to be under-seasoned, something that most elite athletes do not see as a limitation.  Wright would almost certainly be selected in the April draft, but early enough to justify leaving school early?  That’s the decision he’ll face after tonight.

Spark plug running back/kick returner Dennis Johnson and tight end Chris Gragg, an emerging star at that position, have also asked for guidance from league scouts.  Their quotes indicate that both will be back for another season in Razorback red.  If they do return, two positions will have much-needed security heading into the 2012 season.

Cobi Hamilton is an exceptionally talented wide receiver.  While not the complete package – yet – Hamilton does possess the size and speed NFL scouts covet.  Hamilton is lighting fast and has a solid frame (6-3, 209 lbs) that will serve him well in pro football.  Most folks expected Hamilton would be tempted by the NFL.  It seems like a 50-50 proposition that Hamilton returns.  If he does, Cobi will undoubtedly be The Man in a talented but inexperienced wide receiving corps.  Hamilton stands to put together a breakout season in 2012 should he return, making a name for himself like recent SEC alums Julio Jones, A.J. Green, and recently announced NFL draft early entrant Alshon Jeffery.

That leaves us with one more possible, if not likely, early entrant into the NFL Draft.

Tyler Wilson

The lifelong Arkansan has lived his childhood dreams.  He led his high school to state titles.  He got the chance to play at the University of Arkansas.  This season he emerged as a star, garnering all-SEC honors in his first season as a starter.  And now he has the chance to become a first-round NFL draft pick.  Think I’m overstating things?  NFL draft expert Mel Kiper recently listed Wilson as the #3 quarterback in the draft (paywall) should he enter, behind Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III of Baylor.  Says Kiper:

Tyler Wilson, were he to enter the draft, would be at No. 3 on this list for me. This is a kid who just shows great toughness and the ability to be accurate while extending plays and taking hits. He worked behind a subpar offensive line this season, but is willing to look down the barrel and make throws. He slides well to his left or right, has above-average accuracy, and has a good sense of how to calibrate his throws, not overcooking underneath throws, and putting the necessary pace on the ball when he wants to push it down the field. Let’s be clear that there’s no guarantee at all that Wilson would land in Round 1 were he to stay in the draft. But he does have that kind of potential.

With USC’s Matt Barkley and Oklahoma’s Landy Jones opting to stay in school, this NFL draft appears very lean at the quarterback position.  With teams like Seattle, Washington, and Oakland (to name a few) uncertain with their situations, it’s a good year to be a quarterback in the draft.  Add to that fact that Indianapolis holds the number one pick and will likely select Luck, andthat means Wilson has the chance to find himself a first round pick this year.  If he gets good feedback from scouts (and if Kiper is hearing this about Wilson, it’s easy to assume Wilson will also hear it) we may watch Tyler Wilson’s last  game as a Razorback tonight.

Enjoy tonight, folks.  Win or lose, this is the last time we’ll get to see a group of very special Razorbacks represent our state and our university.  Let’s hope that some of them decide to give it one more try next season.  I, for one, plan to treat tonight like the last time I’ll see them all.  If they report back in August, we will all be lucky – and poised for another special season.

Free Money – Week 11

Posted by Brett Kincaid on November 10, 2011

It was far from pretty, but I managed to scratch out a win last week.

For those paying close attention, that’s exactly how I opened last week’s column.

The Hogs covered with ease, and Vandy roared back to cover against Florida.  On the other hand, the state of Alabama punished me – UAB and Bama both failed to cover.  Thankfully the offense was putrid in the GAME BIGGER THAN WORDS CAN DESCRIBE so that under hit with great comfort.  Sunday was gross, so we don’t need to even talk about it.  In the end, I posted a very, very modest $18 gain.

It was not as good for Adam.

For those paying close attention, I wrote that in last week’s column, too.

Adam actually went 4-4 on the week, but a large loss on his teaser bet sent AB to another ink in the red.  He lost a total play (Texas A&M v. OU) for the first time in a while, but ultimately Alabama screwed Adam, too.  He’s decided to double-down this week in an effort to rebuild his bank.  No TARP bailouts at BlogHawgs.com.  For Adam the week netted a $85 loss.

I absolutely hate the NFL this week.  I’ve only got 2 recommendations, and one of them is tonight.  Adam has once again gone heavy on Saturday, but there are two Sunday picks for you NFL fans to evaluate.  From the looks of our picks, we both will be glued to the TV on Saturday.

Once again, here is a quick recap of the rules:

  • Maximum of 8 single plays during the week
  • One option teaser and one optional parlay also allowed
  • Minimum of $50 wager
  • Both started the season with a $1,000 bankroll but can buy back into the game if they go bust

Free Money!

Brett ($1,855)

  • Syracuse (+3.5) v. South Florida, $55 to win $50
  • Houston (-34.5) at Tulane, $110 to win $100
  • OVER 65.5 – Texas A&M at Kansas State, $55 to win $50
  • Mississippi State (+17.5) v. Alabama, $55 to win $50
  • Southern Miss (-9) v. Central Florida, $110 to win $100
  • Arkansas (-14) v. Tennessee, $55 to win $50
  • Chargers (-7) v. Raiders, $110 to win $100
  • Dolphins (-4) v. Redskins, $55 to win $50

  • Total Wagers:  $605
  • Max Win: $550

Adam ($630)

  • Texas Tech (+17) v. Oklahoma St, $110 to win $100
  • Auburn (+12.5) at Georgia, $110 to win $100
  • Oregon (+3.5) v. Stanford, $110 to win $100
  • Maryland (+20.5) v. Notre Dame, $55 to win $50
  • Steelers (-3) at Cincinnati, $110 to win $100
  • Bills (+5.5) at Cowboys, $110 to win $100

  • Total Wagers: $605
  • Max Win: $550

Wager accordingly. As usual, BlogHawgs.com is not responsible for you getting arrested after rioting at the gambling window, shouting that you deserve one more chance to win money despite the fact you failed to stop yourself from placing the bet in the first place.

Free Money, Week 10

Posted by Brett Kincaid on November 3, 2011

It was far from pretty, but I managed to scratch out a win last week.  The Hogs had a chance to cover late – despite long, long odds – and ended up hanging on to victory by the narrowest of margins.  Tennessee never really threatened South Carolina, and the Broncos got mocked in their own house by Detroit.  Thankfully the Texans kicked a cover FG very late, San Fran held on to narrowly cover, and the Chiefs rewarded my favor with a cover & win against San Diego.  I’m still kicking myself for not making a moneyline bet on Monday.  For the week, I picked up $55 after giving money back to the house in Week Eight.

It was not as good for Adam.  His season of bad beats continues, highlighted by a triple overtime Stanford cover – thanks only to the rule that requires 2-point conversion attempts in the third overtime.  Clemson flirted with a comeback but it never materialized, and we’re still waiting on the Cowboys to take the field in Philadelphia.  Overall AB dropped another $130 last week.  Here’s hoping he can find the right path soon.

It looks like another tough week for gamblers.  Nothing jumps off the page at me this week like Kansas City did last week, but I see some winners on the board.  Adam has been picking up wins pretty routinely with Over bets, and he recommends two this week.  I’ll take my hand with my first Under bet this week, predicting a big defensive struggle in the Game of the Century.

Once again, here is a quick recap of the rules:

  • Maximum of 8 single plays during the week
  • One option teaser and one optional parlay also allowed
  • Minimum of $50 wager
  • Both started the season with a $1,000 bankroll but can buy back into the game if they go bust

Free Money!

Brett ($1,837)

  • Vanderbilt (+14) at Florida, $55 to win $50
  • Arkansas (-5) v. South Carolina, $66 to win $60
  • UAB (+28) v. Houston, $55 to win $50
  • UNDER 41.5, LSU at Alabama, $55 to win $50
  • Alabama (-4.5) v. LSU, $77 to win $70
  • Buccaneers (+9) at Saints, $55 to win $50
  • Chiefs (-4) v. Miami, $55 to win $50
  • Bears (+9) at Eagles, $55 to win $50
  • Teaser:  Arkansas (+1) & San Diego (+11.5) v. Green Bay, $60 to win $50

  • Total Wagers:  $533
  • Max Win: $480

Adam ($715)

  • USC (-21) at Colorado, $55 to win $50
  • Arkansas (-5) v. South Carolina, $55 to win $50
  • Mississippi (-2) at Kentucky, $55 to win $50
  • Alabama (-4.5) v. LSU, $55 to win $50
  • OVER 69 – Texas A&M/Oklahoma, $55 to win $50
  • Wake Forest (+14) v. Notre Dame, $55 to win $50
  • OVER 69.5 – Oklahoma St/Kansas St, $55 to win $50
  • Teaser: Bama (+1.5) & Falcons (-1) at Colts, $120 to win $100

  • Total Wagers: $505
  • Max Win: $450

Wager accordingly. As usual, BlogHawgs.com is not responsible for you engineering a fake wedding then divorcing 10 weeks later in an attempt to satisfy the Russian mob.

Free Money – Week 9

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 28, 2011

Time to Rebound

Well, we went back to normal in every way possible.  I went back to writing the Free Money column last week, but we both took losses.  This feels very 2001 right now.  That year Adam and I – again, assuming gambling was legal – could not lose for weeks on end before getting our clocks cleaned in early November.  I think it’s fair to say that all people that have a high level of risk aversion really need to think long and hard before taking our advice.

This is not uncommon, of course.  Like most football teams, Vegas needs a few weeks to get to their A-Game.  They have indeed found a good groove, and the lines for both college and NFL games have really tightened recently.  As we have said more than once, if this were easy Vegas wouldn’t look as nice as it does.

It doesn’t look like there are too many value plays on the board.  Both Adam and I have decided not to max out our straight up plays and neither of us has played the parlay.  Adam went ahead with the teaser bet this week.  I’m taking a break, though, after two consecutive teaser losses.

Once again, here is a quick recap of the rules:

  • Maximum of 8 single plays during the week
  • One option teaser and one optional parlay also allowed
  • Minimum of $50 wager
  • Both started the season with a $1,000 bankroll but can buy back into the game if they go bust

Free Money!

Brett ($1,782)

  • Arkansas (-10) at Vanderbilt, $55 to win $50
  • Tennessee (+3.5) v. South Carolina, $55 to win $50
  • Texans (-9.5) v. Jaguars, $110 to win $100
  • Broncos (+3) v. Lions, $55 to win $50
  • 49ers (-9) v. Browns, $55 to win $50
  • Chiefs (+3.5) v. Chargers, $77 to win $70

  • Total Wagers:  $407
  • Max Win: $370

Adam ($845)

  • Kentucky (+10) v. Mississippi St., $55 to win $50
  • Arkansas (-10) at Vanderbilt, $55 to win $50
  • Clemson (-3.5) at Georgia Tech, $55 to win $50
  • Michigan St. (+4) at Nebraska, $55 to win $50
  • Texas (-28) v. Kansas, $110 to win $100
  • OVER 61.5 – Texas A&M/Missouri, $55 to win $50
  • USC (+7.5) v. Stanford, $55 to win $50
  • Dallas (+3) at Philadelphia, $55 to win $50
  • Teaser: Bills (pick) & S.F. (-2.5) $60 to win $50

  • Total Wagers: $555
  • Max Win: $500

Wager accordingly. As usual, BlogHawgs.com is not responsible for you blowing play after play in a World Series Game 6 just to pay off your debts.

Free Money, Week 8 Results

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 26, 2011

We'll get it back...eventually.

I guess this is karma.  After subjecting Adam to bad juju for back-to-back weeks, I finally saw “The Streak” broken.  Unfortunately for AB, the black cloud extended to his side of the ledger sheet, too, making this the third red-ink week in a row for him.  We’ve got to turn this ship around quickly!

Seven consecutive winners provided some padding for me, but I ultimately dropped $93 this week thanks to a miserable Sunday and misfires on the parlay and teaser bets.  A surprisingly strong Saturday (3-0 on straight plays) had me thinking of a big payoff.  Losses by Tampa (+1), Detroit (-3.5), and Oakland (-3.5) and a ridiculous push by Cleveland (-3) quickly ended any thoughts of another profitable week for me.  For the weekend I finished with a terrifically mediocre record of 4-5-1.  That puts my season W-L-P mark at 39-24-3 and total cash on hand of $1,782.

Adam split the day on Saturday with his straight-up plays, but the teaser bit him in the behind thanks to a second half collapse by Auburn.  He continued to spit in the wind on Sunday, again winning 2 and losing 2 to end the weekend.  AB finished the week at 4-5-0 and is playing .500 ball after 8 weeks with a 34-34-3 season record and $845 in the bank.

It’s time to focus and get some money back this weekend.

Free Money – Week 8

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 20, 2011

Back to normal. This feels right. I think it will be a good weekend at the wagering window.

After two weeks of dysfunction thanks to travel on my part, I am back to writing the Free Money column. As Adam alluded to two weeks ago, you don’t want to disrupt anything during a streak. We did that, and karma punched back with a vengeance. Unfortunately for Adam, karma took out her frustration on him and not me. I say this is the week he gets it back.

Several good plays on the board this week, both on Saturday and Sunday. I’ve got three straight plays on Saturday and five on Sunday. I’m adding a parlay to this week (that’s how good I feel) and my teaser. Adam is splitting it down the middle with four on each day. Proving that he’s got more brains than me, AB is skipping the parlay but playing the teaser.

Once again, here is a quick recap of the rules:

  • Maximum of 8 single plays during the week
  • One option teaser and one optional parlay also allowed
  • Minimum of $50 wager
  • Both started the season with a $1,000 bankroll but can buy back into the game if they go bust

Free Money!

Brett ($1,875)

  • UNDER 56.5 – Arkansas v. Mississippi, $55 to win $50
  • Kansas St. (-10.5) at Kansas, $77 to win $70
  • Vanderbilt (-10.5) v. Army, $55 to win $50
  • Buccaneers (+1) v. Bears, $77 to win $70
  • Browns (-3) v. Seahawks, $55 to win $50
  • Lions (-3.5) v. Falcons, $55 to win $50
  • Vikings (+9) v. Packers, $55 to win $50
  • Raiders (-3.5) v. Chiefs, $66 to win $60
  • Parlay: Kansas St (-10.5) & Buccaneers (+1), $50 to win $125
  • Teaser: Arkansas (-9.5) & Vikings (+15), $60 to win $50
  • Total Wagers: $605
  • Max Win: $625

Adam ($925)

  • Illinois (-3.5) at Purdue, $55 to win $50
  • Auburn (+21) at LSU, $55 to win $50
  • Michigan St. (+7) v. Wisconsin, $55 to win $50
  • Mississippi (+15) v. Arkansas, $55 to win $50
  • OVER 44.5 – Texans at Titans, $55 to win $50
  • Raiders (-4.5) v. Chiefs, $55 to win $50
  • Steelers (-3.5) at Arizona, $55 to win $50
  • Packers (-9) at Minnesota, $55 to win $50
  • Teaser: Auburn (+27) & Alabama (-23), $60 to win $50
  • Total Wagers: $500
  • Max Win: $450

Wager accordingly. As usual, BlogHawgs.com is not responsible for you letting loose dozens of wild animals in a final act of defiance because you cannot pay your bills.

Free Money, Week 7 Results

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 18, 2011

Nothing to see here… move along, people.

I’ll be back to writing this week’s Free Money column.  Hopefully returning to our roots of success will turn things around.  Adam suffered his worst beat of the year, putting him in the red for the season.  I managed to eke out a win, but it’s no reason to brag.

I went 5-4 on the week, including a grizzly two-team tease loss where neither play (Pitt -0.5 & Steelers -6.5) hit.  The SEC saved my bacon, thanks in large part to Florida’s inability to field a punt.  On the week I managed a meager $25 profit.

Adam took his second consecutive bad beat.  The South Carolina (-3) non-cover crystallized the type of Saturday Adam faced.  Up four points on the last play of the game, the Cocks inexplicably took a safety to end the contest – pushing the final score to 14-12 rather than 14-10, thus blowing the cover.  It got worse from there.  Adam finished 2-7 on the week, costing him $290 and putting his season total under the $1,000 initial bankroll.

Let’s hope this week turns things around for us all.  It’s time for the BlogHawgs to take Vegas to the cleaners.

Free Money, Week 6 Results

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 11, 2011

I think it’s best to start off this week’s Free Money review with a quote:

Gamblers are the most superstitious people in the world. They make baseball players look spontaneous and care free by comparison.

That’s why the BlogHawgs are asking for trouble this week. If you have been paying attention (READ: You are a degenerate gambler) you know that BK and I have been on an unprecedented roll. It’s October 7th, and neither of us have finished in the red for a week, yet, this football season.

The last thing we want to do is change what is working. But, unfortunately, sometimes Mr. Kincaid Goes to Washington (the White House, no less!).

That was from our Free Money Week 6 column Adam posted last Friday.

Sometimes fate intervenes and completely disrupts your mojo.  I had to travel last week, preventing me from writing our Free Money column.  For 5 consecutive weeks I wrote this column & tracked all our plays.  During that time, Adam and I posted winning plays at the end of the weekend.  Because of my travel, Adam had to write the column.  His service to you, the reader, cost him his first losing week.

It was an uncharacteristically bad week for Adam.  Most of his plays turned late, adding insult to injury.  He gets one pass from me, though, on the Auburn play – a clear reverse-jinx situation.  The play still counts, but it was obvious that AB was willing to sacrifice $55 to secure a Hogs win.  Adam was close to breaking even but for the Kansas City comeback on Sunday at Indianapolis (-2) and a late cover score from Texas Tech against the Texas A&M Aggies (-9.5) on Saturday.  For the week, Adam dropped $285 after going 2-7 for the weekend.  The good news is that AB continues to be in the black for the season with a balance of $1,215.  Expect a big bounce-back week from Adam this week.

For me, it was another good week.  I didn’t like a ton of games so only played a handful.  The New York Giants (-10) laid an egg at home on Sunday to Seattle (SEATTLE!), but that was my only loss on the weekend.  A 5-1 week added $195 to the till for my year, pushing my balance to $1,850 after six weeks.  I’ve still not experienced a losing week, a fact that defies logic.

Even after a disappointing week, Adam still has a year-long winning percentage of 55.36% after six weeks.  I’ve pushed my winning clip up to 65.31% – a rate that defies common sense.  If I’m you, I play Adam’s picks in Week 7 and not mine.
