Blog Hawgs Heisman 5+1 Final Results

Posted by Adam Butler on December 7, 2012

Special to BlogHawgs by Kris Boyd

It’s Heisman Trophy Award Eve, so that means it’s time for our final Blog Hawgs Heisman 5+1 of the season.

Below are the results from the 2012 final voting for the Blog Hawgs Heisman 5+1.  The +1 voters feature media members, bloggers, former Division 1 football players and no-talent hacks like myself. The voters are from 12 different states and it is goal of the +1 to eventually feature voters from all 50 states.

Johnny Manziel dominated the first place votes, which are in parentheses.  Collin Klein kept it close.  The real race was for 3rd place between USCw’s Marqise Lee and Notre Dame’s  Manti Te’o.  Lee edged Te’o even though Manti received some first place votes.

There was a clear top 5.  A few voters noted they felt Te’o wasn’t as impressive as Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina or Jarvis Jones of Georgia.  There was a note from a voter who felt Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones was more valuable to his team than Te’o, as Barrett won the Outland Trophy last year, moved to Center this year and was the heart and soul of the best OL for the best team in college football.

The results:

Johnny Manziel: 71 (11)

Collin Klein: 61 (2)

Marqise Lee: 31

Manti Te’o: 30 (2)

Braxton Miller: 11

Tavon Austin: 5

Kenjon Barner: 5

Stepfan Taylor: 3

Montee Ball: 2

Jarvis Jones: 2

Barrett Jones: 2

Colby Cameron: 1

Jeremy Hill: 1

Jordan Lynch: 1

Nick Florence: 1

Jadeveon Clowney: 1

A few other notes:

-Tajh Boyd received no votes even though he led Clemson to a 10-2 record and put up great stats.

-Tavon Austin was shunned despite having over 2,500 yards of total offense.

-Nick Florence received one vote even though his stats were almost identical to Robert Griffin, III’s 2011 Heisman-winning stats while only having two less wins than RG3.

Blog Hawgs Heisman 5 + 1 Week 12

Posted by Adam Butler on November 27, 2012

Special to BlogHawgs by Kris Boyd

Here’s our annual disclaimer:

Keep in mind that the Blog Hawgs Heisman 5+1 was created not to predict how Heisman voters would vote or who would actually win the Heisman Trophy, but who should win the Heisman Trophy.

Like most years, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner will be the person who should win it… unless the voters brainlessly decide that a freshman cannot be the pick.

As for invitees to the presentation, I think the Heisman Trust should either invite only Johnny Manziel and Collin Klein or all six of the players I’ve listed here.  How do you choose between Marqise Lee and Tavon Austin or Nick Florence and Tajh Boyd?  You can’t.

That won’t happen though.  The voters will cave to the ESPN/NBC hype and send the defensive player who isn’t ranked in the top 50 in the country in total tackles to the ceremony.  Don’t misunderstand me, I think Manti Te’o is a great player, but he’s not even the best defensive player in the country.

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M  (3,419 yards passing, 68.3%, 24 TD’s, 8 INT’s; 1,181 yards rushing, 6.4 ypc, 19 TD’s)  The Heisman is his.  He has been most impressive in his debut season.  He put up better total offensive stats than Cam Newton and made an Alabama defense look silly.  A player’s age should have no bearing on the award.

2. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (2,306 yards passing, 66.7%, 14 TD’s, 6 INT’s; 787 yards rushing,  4.6 ypc, 20 TD’s)  Klein was off this past week.  He has one more game this week, but nothing short of 750 total yards and 8 touchdowns could surpass Johnny Trademark at this point.

3. Nick Florence, QB, Baylor  (3,825 yards passing, 61.4%, 30 TD’s, 13 INT’s; 436 yards rushing, 8 TD’s)  Baylor will probably end up with two more losses under Nick Florence than under Robert Griffin, III, but the stats are going to be almost identical.

4. Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia (1,156 yards receiving, 105 receptions, 11.0 ypr, 12 TD’s; 521 yards rushing, 10.6 ypc, 2 TD’s; 28 kickoff returns, 738 yards, 26.3 ypr, 1 TD; 15 punt returns, 165 yards, 11.0 ypr, 1 TD) Tavon put up over 2,500 yards total offense and had more receiving and rushing yards than former Heisman-winning Notre Dame receiver Tim Brown.

5. Marqise Lee, WR, USC  (1,680 yards receiving, 112 receptions, 15.0 ypr, 14 TD’s; 110 yards rushing, 11.0 ypc; 28 kickoff returns, 802 yards, 28.6 ypr, 1 TD) Marqise wasn’t so marquee these past few weeks, but that no doubt has more to do with losing his quarterback than anything else.

+1. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson  (3,550 yards passing, 66.6%, 34 TD’s, 13 INT’s; 439 yards rushing, 5 TD’s)

Blog Hawgs Heisman 5 + 1 Week 12

Posted by Adam Butler on November 20, 2012

Special to BlogHawgs by Kris Boyd

Baylor forced Collin Klein to do two things last week that he had not done all season long: throw the ball more than 26 times and lose.

I’m not a very smart man, but I’m pretty sure those things correlate with one other. Colby Cameron really let me down this week and considering there were zero Louisiana Tech fans chiming in on him… I guess I’m the only one. Marqise Lee may just be the best player in college football. Unlike every other Heisman list in America, this one does not include a linebacker who is tied for 44th in the country in tackles.

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (3,047 yards passing, 67.7%, 21 TD’s, 7 INT’s; 1,114 yards rushing, 6.5 ypc, 17 TD’s) I don’t think I can be any more clear on this one: I hope the voters do not exclude Johnny Trademark because he is a freshman. That would be a travesty–a travesty along the lines of voters excluding Darren McFadden because he was a sophomore then awarding the Heisman Trophy to a sophomore one year later. Johnny deserves the Trophy.

2. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State (2,306 yards passing, 66.7%, 14 TD’s, 6 INT’s; 787 yards rushing, 4.6 ypc, 20 TD’s) The +1 thought about dropping Optimus more, but couldn’t due to his almost year-long perfect streak.

3. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (3,367 yards passing, 68.0%, 33 TD’s, 11 INT’s; 413 yards rushing, 4 TD’s) Tajh continues to wow. You won’t win it Tajh, but you deserve to be a finalist and receive a lot of 2nd and 3rd-place votes.

4. Marqise Lee, WR, USC (1,604 receiving yards, 107 receptions, 15.0 ypr, 14 TD’s; 110 yards rushing, 11.0 ypc; 24 kickoff returns, 704 yards, 29.3 ypr, 1 TD) Marqise continues to destroy opposing defenses. Not playing in the PAC 12 Championship (and the fact that Matt Barkley is not throwing to him anymore) may be all that keeps him from having a 2,000 yard season.

5. Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA (1,441 yards rushing, 6.2 ypc, 10 TD’s; 286 yards receiving, 2 TD’s) Franklin saved his best for last by ripping rival USC for 171 yards. Franklin’s only downfall is his lack of consistency throughout the season.

+1. Nick Florence, QB, Baylor (3,429 yards passing, 61.6%, 27 TD’s, 13 INT’s; 385 yards rushing, 7 TD’s)

Our long, (Razorback) National Nightmare is almost over. These Fake Tweets (and the knowledge that the Arkansas Razorbacks should have a new head football coach in the next 2-3 weeks) are all that keep me hanging on through to the bitter end of the 2012 College Football season.

The only rules for this column are that the fake user names can’t be longer than 15 characters (but may or may not be registered, already), the Tweets cannot exceed 140 characters, and I have to end each one with a smarmy hash tag. Let’s have some hateful fun.

Blog Hawgs Heisman 5 + 1–Week 11

Posted by Adam Butler on November 13, 2012

Special to Blog Hawgs by Kris Boyd

Collin Klein placed himself back atop the 5+1, but Johnny Manziel closed the gap with a very impressive win.  Colby Cameron continued to wave his arms while screaming “Look at me!  Somebody look at me!”.  Marqise Lee is putting up Tim Brown numbers, but not Tim Brown wins.

1. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (2,020 yards passing, 69.7%, 12 TD’s, 3 INT’s; 748 yards rushing,  4.9 ypc, 19 TD’s)  Klein didn’t put up outstanding stats but once again led Kansas State to another high-profile win and, more importantly, to the #1 spot in the polls.

2. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (2,780 yards passing, 67.6%, 18 TD’s, 6 INT’s; 1,014 yards rushing, 6.5 ypc, 15 TD’s)  Johnny Trademark did what nobody outside of College Station thought he could do–make an Alabama defense look pedestrian.

3. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon  (1,360 yards rushing, 6.8 ypc, 19 TD’s; 220 yards receiving, 1 TD)  Barner’s playing time against Cal was shortened due to injury, but he was only averaging a little over 3 yards per carry prior to that.

4. Colby Cameron, QB, Louisiana Tech  (3,283 yards passing, 71.0%, 27 TD’s, 0 INT’s; 142 yards rushing, 3 TD’s)  Colby continued to win and continued to put up great numbers.  And, while I’m not trying to say La Tech is playing a SEC schedule, La Tech has played Illinois, Virginia and Texas A&M.

5. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (2,941 yards passing, 68.0%, 28 TD’s, 9 INT’s; 310 yards rushing, 1 TD’s)  Tajh continued his efficient ways in another blowout win.  Tajh is wanting his invitation to New York.

+1. Marqise Lee, WR, USC (1,447 receiving yards, 98 receptions, 14.8 ypr, 13 TD’s; 110 yards rushing, 11.0 ypc; 23 kickoff returns, 677 yards, 29.4 ypr, 1 TD)

Blog Hawgs Heisman 5+1–10/30/12

Posted by Adam Butler on October 30, 2012

Special to BlogHawgs by Kris M. Boyd

Collin Klein continued his dominance last week and Kenjon Barner established himself as the clear #2 on the Heisman 5+1.  Just remember where you saw Colby Cameron first when all the national Heisman pundits start jumping on his bandwagon in a few weeks!  Matt Scott hopped back on the list with an impressive win and Tajh Boyd finally made the cut.

1. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (1,630 yards passing, 70.9%, 12 TD’s, 2 INT’s; 634 yards rushing,  5.2 ypc, 16 TD’s)  Optimus Klein keeps chewing up other Heisman candidates like the Devastator.  Who’s next?

2. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon  (974 yards rushing, 6.9 ypc, 14 TD’s; 159 yards receiving, 1 TD)  Barner is the best running back in the country.  Imagine what his stats would look like if Oregon played any close games and he could play second halves.

3. Colby Cameron, QB, Louisiana Tech  (2,598 yards passing, 70.5%, 21 TD’s, 0 INT’s; 110 yards rushing, 2 TD’s)  Colby keeps winning.  That’s the important part.  The stats will come in that offense. Cameron deserves an invite to the Heisman ceremony if Louisiana Tech goes 11-1 (or even 10-2).

4. Matt Scott, QB, Arizona (2,724 yards passing, 62.9%, 20 TD’s, 9 INT’s; 291 yards rushing, 4.4 ypc, 4 TD’s)  Scott dropped almost 500 yards of total offense on USC and placed himself back on the 5+1.  Arizona has 3 losses, but all 3 were to teams ranked in the top 15.

5. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (2,336 yards passing, 67.7%, 20 TD’s, 6 INT’s; 219 yards rushing, 4 TD’s)  Hello, Tajh!  Where have you been all year?  This is what Clemson fans, and quite frankly, the 5+1 was expecting coming into the season.

+1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (2,216 yards passing, 64.3%, 16 TD’s, 6 INT’s; 793 yards rushing, 6.8 ypc, 13 TD’s)

BlogHawgs Heisman 5+1–10/23/12

Posted by Adam Butler on October 23, 2012

Special to Blog Hawgs from Kris M. Boyd

I can already feel the e-mails and comments coming.  “Where did Beau Blakenship go?  You can’t punish him just because he was off this past week!”  To you tens of Beau Blakenship fans out there… I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Beau Blakenship.  You can’t stop Beau Blakenship, you can only hope to contain him.

Wasn’t there supposed to be an epic battle between two Heisman frontrunners this week?  Did Geno Smith miss the bus?  It looks like those NFL teams who have adopted the “Torpedo for Geno” losing campaign may want to rethink that. (My personal favorite: “Petrino for Geno”)

The +1 also wanted to give a quick acknowledgement to Stefphon “No Typo” Jefferson.  Stefphon is averaging 156 rushing yards per game and needs to average 150.4 yards in his remaining games to hit 2,000.

1. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (1,397 yards passing, 70.5%, 10 TD’s, 2 INT’s; 551 yards rushing,  5.0 ypc, 14 TD’s)  Optimus Klein Transformed the 5+1 and completely obliterated (an awful) West Virginia defense to solidify himself atop the Heisman mountain.

2. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon  (870 yards rushing, 6.6 ypc, 12 TD’s; 112 yards receiving, 1 TD)  Kenjon could have rushed for 400 yards if Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly had turned him loose all game instead of just the first quarter.

3. Seth Doege, QB, Texas Tech  (2,209 yards passing, 70.8%, 28 TD’s, 7 INT’s)  Seth has thrown for 817 yards and 13 TD’s over the past two weeks during wins over West Virginia and TCU.

4. Colby Cameron, QB, Louisiana Tech  (2,306 yards passing, 71.3%, 20 TD’s, 0 INT’s) Colby has one blemish on his record which is a loss to Texas A&M that should have been a win (except for the NCAA replacements refs. Wait….  What?  Those weren’t replacement refs? *shaking head*)

5. Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia  (2,414 yards passing, 74.2%, 26 TD’s, 2 INT’s)  Geno has to start winning again.  Period.

+1. Stefphon Jefferson, RB, Nevada  (1,248 yards rushing, 5.0 ypc, 15 TD’s)

BlogHawgs Heisman 5+1, Week 7

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 16, 2012

Heisman 5+1 author, Kris Boyd

Be sure to follow @Heisman5plus1 on Twitter

Heeeeey!  We welcome back an actual warm body to fill the +1 spot (Editor’s Note: Even if it is Someone Named Beau Blankenship) .  Geno Smith lost, but looking at his line you would not have guessed WVU was destroyed.

Optimus Klein continues to carry K-State on his back.  Braxton Miller continues to give naysayers the finger.  The middle.  And, we have a freshman sighting!  Did you know Johnny Manziel’s nickname is “Johnny Football”?  Me neither.  They need to give that some more “pub”.

1. Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia  (2,271 yards passing, 75.3%, 25 TD’s, 0 INT’s)  Geno didn’t win, but going undefeated is not pre-requisite for winning the Heisman.  He’s still clearly the front runner.

2. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (1.074 yards passing, 66.9%, 7 TD’s, 2 INT’s; 510 yards rushing,  5.2 ypc, 10 TD’s)  Klein Sol cleaned up on the ground against the upset-minded Cyclones.  New week’s matchup between Kansas State and West Virginia could very well determine the Heisman race.

3. Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State  (1,271 yards passing, 60.4%, 11 TD’s, 4 INT’s; 912 yards rushing, 7.1 ypc, 9 TD’s)  Ohio State probably should have lost against Indiana and Miller was not as impressive as his numbers looked.  That being said OSU still won and Miller still led them there.

4. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M  ( 1,680 yards passing, 67.4%, 14 TD’s, 3 INT’s; 676 yards rushing, 7.4 ypc, 10 TD’s)  Heeeeeere’s Johnny… (Editor’s Note: Manziel’salready nationally overused nickname was here but has been redacted to preserve my sanity)  TAMU has been handed a few games… one by Coach Freeze and one by officials, but still, a freshman putting up those numbers during wins in the SEC is impressive.

5. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon  (727 yards rushing, 6.3 ypc, 9 TD’s; 112 yards receiving, 1 TD)  Kenjon was OFF last week.  He did not have a BYE week.

+1. Beau Blakenship, RB, OHIO  (951 yards rushing, 4.8 ypc, 6 TD’s; 125 yards receiving, 1 TD)

BlogHawgs Heisman 5+1+1–10/2/12

Posted by Adam Butler on October 2, 2012

Ok, maybe the +1 was a little quick to jump on the WVU National Championship bandwagon.

The Mountaineers will not score 70 on everyone (especially BAMA or LSU) but others may be able to score 63 on them.

But hey, I make Heisman picks, not Championship picks.

There is not a lot of movement this week in the BlogHawgs Heisman 5+1 as many schools were “OFF”. They did not have “BYEs”.  I want to stress this as it is impossible for any team to have a “BYE” week during the regular season.  “BYEs” are for tournaments.

1. Geno Smith, QB, WVU  (1,728 yards passing, 83.4%, 20 TDs, 0 INTs)  Geno threw more touchdowns (8) than incompletions (6). That’s absurd.

2. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia  (1,378 yards passing, 68.5%, 12 TDs, 3 INTs) Murray was good, but not spectacular in a shootout win over Tennessee.  We need to see more from Murray for him to maintain this spot moving forward.

3. E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State (1,147 passing yards, 73.3 %, 9 TDs, 1 INT; 197 yards rushing, 1 TD) EJ was ho-hum in a win over against a solid South Florida team.  The matchups with Miami, Va Tech and Florida are looming large for Manuel.

4. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State  (758 yards passing, 70.0%, 5 TDs, 2 INTs; 289 yards rushing, 5 TDs)  “HB” was off this week.  The +1 cannot wait to watch him vs. Geno in a few weeks.

5. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon  (605 yards rushing, 6.3 ypc, 9 TDs; 112 yards receiving, 1 TD)  Yeah, we picked the wrong Oregon RB, BUT… De’Anthony Thomas is so much fun to watch he had to be on here at some point, right?  Right?

+1. Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State  (993 yards passing, 62.8%, 8 TDs, 3 INTs; 577 yards rushing, 6.4 ypc, 7 TD’s)

BlogHawgs.com Heisman 5+1–9/25/12

Posted by Adam Butler on September 25, 2012

Special to BlogHawgs from Kris M. Boyd

Johnathan Franklin averaged almost 200 yards a game during UCLA’s first three victories. He barely averaged 3 yards per carry in their first loss. Has anyone ever made a faster leap to #1 and then back off the list in the history of the 5 + 1? The answer is no. Geno Smith continues his monster year. The +1 is predicting WVU will go undefeated with Geno winning the Heisman. Mark it down. Week 4.

1. Geno Smith, QB, WVU (1,072 yards passing, 81.4%, 12 TD’s, 0 INT’s) Geno made Maryland’s secondary look like the cornerbacks from Tecmo Bowl. The +1 will be shocked if Geno doesn’t throw for at least 300 yards each game this season. He hasn’t thrown an interception in his last 195 attempts.

2. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia (1,092 yards passing, 66.3%, 10 TD’s, 2 INT’s) Murray led Jawga to a very comfortable win over a Vanderbilt team that gave another top 10 team fits just a few weeks ago. The +1 loves Murray, but to our dismay, he’s just not going to put up the numbers. As one Bulldog fan put it, “An ideal Aaron Murray game for us is 250 yards, 2 touchdowns, no interceptions and a win.” Touché.

3. E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State (905 passing yards, 73.4 %, 8 TD’s, 1 INT; 188 yards rushing, 1 TD) E.J. threw the underachieving Florida State monkey off his back by dismantling Clemson. He has now thrust Florida State into the spotlight as a legitimate National Championship contender and himself as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate… assuming Geno Smith never plays another game.

4. Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State (758 yards passing, 70.0%, 5 TD’s, 2 INT’s; 289 yards rushing, 5 TD’s) The original “Honey Badger” continues to carry Kansas State on his back. Klein led the Wildcats to one of their few program wins over OU at Norman. It’s an impressive feat even if OU is vastly overrated (Dear OU fans, Please fire Bob Stoops. We will take that “loser”. Signed, every Arkansas Razorback fan).

5. De’Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon (276 yards rushing, 11.0 ypc, 4 TD’s; 165 yards receiving, 13 ypr, 3 TD’s; 16 yards per punt return) If a “Most Exciting Player Trophy” existed, then Thomas would win it. Thomas is the +1’s favorite college football player. He averages almost 12 yards every time he touches the ball. Our favorite quote from Thomas: “I’m nobody. I’m Kenjon’s backup.” Uh, sure De’Anthony.

+1. Matt Barkley, QB, USC (813 yards passing, 60.6%, 10 TD’s, 3 INT’s)
