Rebel Priorities

Posted by Jeff on January 31, 2011

Apparently they're serving Totties at the state capitol too.

Since there’s obviously nothing else pressing in Mississippi politics right now…  (How’s that education coming?  Still #50?)  … a politician in the land of former Razorback coaches is proposing a bill that would force the University of Mississippi to use Col. Reb as its official mascot.  Oh and while they’re at it, the band is required to play “Dixie” during both football and basketball games.

I cannot believe we here at BH spent so much e-ink on trying to get those crazy Rebel fans to go for Land Shark… just to have some agenda-minded legislator screw it all up with… bills and acts and whatnot.

Don’t Call It A Comeback

Posted by Jeff on January 28, 2011

The Jon & Deek Show is back.

Sorry I don't have a new picture. Forgot the camera. I was there though, I promise. I got the Swag Bag and everything.

Jon Williams and Derek “Deek” Kastner are together again and will soon be broadcasting their show to a new audience that may eventually become statewide.  At a press conference on Friday, January 27th, Jon and Deek announced their partnership with Vertical Media to present the J&D Show on the Hog Sports Radio Network.  Their show will be broadcast in Northwest Arkansas on The Hog Sports Radio on 99.5 and 105.3 FM.  It will be on 97.9 FM and 1290 AM in Siloam Springs and on 1480 AM in Berryville.

Jon and Deek first worked together back on the heritage rock station, 92.1 the Keg.  Jon was doing the morning show and Derek worked as Jon’s stunt boy, Kid K.  Many hilarious things happened including Deek bursting into a lecture hall on campus at the UofA and starting a Hog Call.  Later Jon left for 93.3 the Eagle and Deek took over nights.  Deek has worked on rock stations in Tulsa and northwest Arkansas mostly on 104.9 the X but also including a four year stint with Jon on the Eagle. In 2009, however, he was let go due to the economy and he returned to the X.

Wanting a change in both format and venue, Jon and Deek started working on the possibility of bringing the show back.  Their trail led to Ryan Hughes, CEO and publisher of Vertical Magazine.  Vertical is a free periodical geared towards a male audience.  After much legwork, Jon and Derek created what will be known as the Jon & Deek Show Presented by Vertical Magazine.  The partnership will also include other media through Vertical Media including a website for the show and podcasts.  Dan Storrs the General Manager of Hog Sports Radio indicated that their show will also be streamed and the podcasts will be available on hogsportsradio.com.

Plans to syndicate the show statewide are in the works.  The Hog Sports Radio Network is based out of DeQueen which along with Mena will be the first two cities outside of NWA to get the J&D Show.  Next stop… Little Rock?

When asked about content, Jon replied that the show will be slightly more than 50/50 sports.  The rest will be their usual topics of discussion.  They also indicated that they will continue their work for both the University of Arkansas (as P.A. announcers for both the GymBacks and Lady Hog Basketball) and with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.   Jon also stated that they would continue to work with all of the charitable organizations with which they have served in the past.

Jon and Deek are both old friends of us here at Blog Hawgs and we wish them well and good luck in this venture.  The new Jon and Deek Show starts February 14th.

NWC Report for 1/28/11

Posted by Jeff on January 28, 2011

Miss Arkansas Teen USA of 2010, Megan Burgess was arrested for public intoxication on the campus of the UofA.

The UofA is requesting $141M in bonds for new buildings, renovations and a portion of the new football operations center.

Washington County Circuit Judge William Storey denied a constitutionality claim from a former Elkins teacher charged with having sex with an 18 year old student.

Apparently the Tea party movement has hit Washington County and they do NOT want a $1.09M Animal Shelter.

The owner of the club in Rogers that carded uniformed cops earlier this month is negotiating with the chief of police to not get shut down.

A tragic accident at a Bentonville Elementary School has brought a federal investigation into the safety of soccer goals.

Deek (l) and Jon: Nothing good comes from looks like these.

Jon Williams and Derek “Deek” Kastner plan a press conference for today 11:00 a.m. at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade.  As mentioned here earlier this week, they are expected to announce a new morning radio show.  I’ll be there and I will ask the best question posted here before I leave at 10:30.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

It’s Almost Here

Posted by Brett Kincaid on January 27, 2011

Fear not, Razorback fans.  While the basketball Hogs may bring you down this winter, hope is on the horizon.  Arkansas Baseball returns to action next month.  With a bevy of newcomers, this crop of Razorbacks promise to continue the tradition of superiority at Baum Stadium.  Baseball America, the premiere provider of college baseball news, is not overly impressed with the aforementioned newcomers.  The Hogs did not crack their pre-season Top 25 rankings, which were released today.

Several familiar faces did, and many of the SEC teams Arkansas faces this year are included.  Florida tops the pre-season charts with defending champion South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and LSU also in the first group of rankings.  I expect Arkansas, Mississippi, Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee will visit the Top 25 at some point this year.  And after taking its lumps last spring, Georgia is poised for a big turnaround in 2011.

Arkansas opens its season Feb 18 at home against Delaware State.  Follow this link for the full schedule.

UPDATE:  USA Today released its version of the Top 25 today with Arkansas making an appearance at #24 in the pre-season.

Arkansas 73 Auburn 64 (Free Game Story at Hawgs Illustrated)

Posted by Adam Butler on January 26, 2011

For those of you who didn’t catch the 2 hours of joy that was last night’s showdown between college basketball behemoths Arkansas (13-6, 3-3) and Auburn (7-13, 0-6), here, is a game story from Dudley Dawson and the good folks at Hawgs Illustrated.

Click the Fayetteville Autopark banner add atop the article to thank them for advertising, and thus, temporarily taking down a pay wall. And, be thankful that you didn’t actually WATCH  the game, otherwise you would want to go to the Fayetteville Autopark, buy a car, park on an incline, put it in neutral, lay in its path and let it roll over your face.

Remembering Hawg Ball: A Poll Question Regarding Nolan Richardson

Posted by Adam Butler on January 25, 2011

This one’s simple. It’ll never happen, but if you could take Nolan Richardson back TODAY as UA Head Coach, and he would come, would you do it? Respond in the comments section. Oh,and remember these days (SEE BELOW)? Funny thing is those were the “lean” years.

BREAKING NEWS: BlogHawgs Credited With Coining New Nickname

Posted by Adam Butler on January 25, 2011

for Arkansas commit Kane Whitehurst. The nickname? Kane White Burst.

(To be fair, BlogHawgs has not been credited–I have–but I am ceding that credit to BlogHawgs Nation)

The nickname is sweeping Razorback Nation and has been mentioned on statewide radio. Is this what it feels like to be famous?

Why is the nickname apropos?

Watch the video below and note that all these highlights came from this season, in the second highest classification in Georgia. White Burst reportedly played his sophomore and junior seasons on poor teams, and, after transferring to a different school to showcase his skills, was injured prior to this season and was unable to participate in summer camps (where prospects usually earn their scholarship offers) Therefore, he doesn’t have a ton of offers and is the proverbial “diamond in the rough”.

All he did his senior season is score touchdowns–inclusing FOUR kickoff returns for TDs.

He looks like a baller to me. More importantly, he looks like a baller to UA HC Bobby Petrino, who has a “decent” eye for football talent. The big question is “How did Iowa miss out on one of the fastest white kids in America?”

The Butler Did It–The Cutler Didn’t Edition

Posted by Adam Butler on January 24, 2011

In honor of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s abbreviated appearance in yesterday’s NFC Championship game, I have an abbreviated TBDI, errr TCD.

As the talking heads of the sports world, and many current and former players are rushing to judgment after Cutler missed most of the second half with a reported knee injury, I think few deep breaths are in order.

Lemme just go “Against the Grain”, here, like Andrew “McLovin” Perloff from “The Dan Patrick Show” and throw out my (in this instance) unconventional $.02.

One of my favorite maxims in life is that you should never question a man unless you’ve walked a mile in his shoes. I think that’s a pretty good Rule of Thumb, here.

Sure, current players and former NFL players have a great deal of credibility on this issue, because they have played in THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

But, I dare say that none of them have dealt with the issues that Cutler has this season and throughout his career (and I am not talking about being, almost by acclimation, considered one of the biggest jerks in the NFL). I also think I have some credibility on the issue because I have had about as many surgeries as Mark Schlereth.

Cutler lives–and plays–with Type 1 diabetes–you know, the potentially life-threatening one that requires constant monitoring and daily injections. Let’s just say that he has injected himself on the sidelines more than anybody other than maybe former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson. (actually, that was a cheap joke–Henderson admittedly had a cocaine inhaler, not a syringe, on the sidelines during Super Bowl XIII.)

Cutler was also by far the most-sacked quarterback in the NFL this season with 52 (the Ravens’ Joe Flacco was 2nd with 40) and was on the wrong end of a 9-sack outing by the New York Giants in THE FIRST HALF of a game in October. He ultimately left that game with a concussion, but who wouldn’t have?

My point is that Cutler is jerk, but he isn’t necessarily a pansy–at least not based on the information we have now. That’s why NFL “greats” like Oakland QB Bruce Gradkowski (a guy who didn’t really even beat out JaMarcus Russell for the starting job in Oakland in 2009, and has missed more than his fair share of games due to injuries), should probably keep their Tweets to themselves.

Likewise, one actual NFL great–Deion Sanders, might also want to think twice before questioning someone’s manhood. Sanders, a former 2-sport star who was not necessarily MLB analyst Tim McCarver’s best friend, was a great player.

But, he wasn’t exactly “Prime Time” when he missed much of 2 seasons in his athletic ”prime” because of a turf toe injury. And, as you can see from the link in the preceding sentence, he didn’t particularly enjoy being criticized in much the same way that he criticized Cutler, yesterday.

Yes, I know turf toe is a much more debilitating injury that one would think, but one would also think Deion might understand a thing or two about the apparent severity of injuries being deceiving, and/or the the sting of a former player from a  different era questioning a current player, publicly, during the playoffs.

But that’s not where I am going Against the Grain.

My Against The Grain take on Cutler is that what he did may have actually been tougher than staying on the field, injured, and quashing any hopes of Chicago winning the game.

He struggled mightily in the first half, came back out in the 2nd half, despite being injured, and tried to give it a go, to no avail.  Ultimately, between the coaching staff, Cutler and the medical staff a decision was made that Cutler no longer gave ‘Da Bears da best chance to win and third-stringer Caleb Hanie’s admirable performance in defeat validated the decision. (Why isn’t anyone question backup Todd Collins’ performance? Now, THAT was a weak effort).

Sometimes in life, self evaluation is one of the more difficult tasks we face. And, for that reason, Cutler’s decision was a tough one that, rather than drawing the credit it may actually deserve, will probably follow Cutler for the rest of his life. The primary reason it will, though, is because Cutler is jerk and his sideline demeanor left something to be desired–not necessarily because it was patently selfish or cowardly.

That’s too bad, because, based on what we currently know, it may well have been a reasonable, but difficult, “tough” call by a guy who is, at least at this point, being demonized by, of all things, a bunch of Tweeters.

NWC Report for 1/21/11

Posted by Jeff on January 21, 2011

Apparently someone had one too many McRibs. (Image lovingly stolen from Fayetteville Flyer. )

A Fayetteville man was arrested Tuesday on Federal charges that he and a San Francisco man hacked into AT&T servers and stole email addresses from iPads.  The accused man did not seem to be taking it very seriously.

The McDonalds on College Avenue where you packed on your Freshman 15 is… gone.  It is being replaced with a brand new set of Golden Arches.

Two uniformed Rogers police officers were carded as they tried to enter a private club to serve a warrant.  One officer had his ID, the second did not.  Two more officers arrived later and a funny story got ugly for the bar owner and employee.

The cleanup continues in Cincinnati. Storm debris everywhere.

Snow seems to be the only newsworthy event otherwise.

Have a nice weekend.

Jon Williams On The Move

Posted by Jeff on January 20, 2011

Bye Bye Eagle... Hellooooo...... ??

For those of you in Northwest Arkansas, you might have noticed that Jon Williams, a longtime fixture on the radio in Fayetteville was not on the air to read the school closings this morning.

For 18 years, Jon has been people’s in-car buddy for the commute to work. Jon started on Q-102 when he first moved to Fayetteville to attend the U of A but shortly left that station for KKEG, a heritage rock and roll station.  It was there that Jon made his name in radio.  He started by himself with producer, Bill Nevin and newscaster, Zach Arns.  Nevin left and Zach took a greater role and the show morphed into the Jon and Zach Show.  Ratings continued to grow and in 1997, J&Z left KKEG and started on 93.3 the Eagle.  Again ratings climbed and while Jon’s partners on-air changed (Jennifer Colonna, Derek “Deek” Kastner) and they even experimented with a Top-40 station (Hot Mix 101.9), Jon stayed at or near the top for 13 years with Clear Channel Radio of Northwest Arkansas.

On Wednesday though, Jon put in his two-weeks notice.  As per radio tradition, that means you are off-air.  Radio station managers tend to dislike the thought that they might be paying a DJ to broadcast what they will be doing next and where.  It makes sense but creates a lot of confusion for listeners.

Jon’s future will be on air in Arkansas.  The details are still being ironed out but one hint that perceptive radiophiles should pick up on is that another rock station jock is also no longer on air.  (Think about it.)

I will post more details as they become available.  Jon has always been a close friend of ours here at Blog Hawgs and we wish him the very best in this exciting new venture.

Add Another Mascot to Auburn’s List: The Middle Finger

Posted by Adam Butler on January 19, 2011

Despite a decade’s worth of controversy wrapped into one dream BCS Championship season, the AU program can’t seem to avoid the black cloud of controversy.

The latest example is brought to us by Sports By Brooks, a site that, at least in my opinion, has been pretty spot-on in the past.

Brooks has been all over the “Party With Members of the AU All in Family and former 2-Live Crew” frontman Luther Campbell” shin dig that was apparently scheduled, and then, coincidentally, I am sure, following his report, was apparently cancelled.

Did The All In Family not see ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary on “The U”?  Are they trying to be “Banned in the USA”?

Meanwhile, Walt Williams, Northwest Arkansas’ high-school athlete marketer to Auburn   The Stars, appears to be back in The Game, and this Bama blogger has him in his crosshairs. No, really. I am beginning to think it may be warranted.

Hogs Announce Inviting 2011 Football Schedule

Posted by Adam Butler on January 18, 2011

228 days. Tyler Wilson–you are on the clock.

That is about the best schedule you can hope for right now if you are a SEC West member. Wilson and the new offensive tackles get a 3-game, home, dress rehearsal. The open date comes at a favorable time, the ”swing” games (AU, USCE & MSU) are in Arkansas and a 2-game roadie to Nashville and Oxford looks as winnable as a 2-game SEC road trip in October has ever looked.

Yes, the Hogs play at SEC heavyweights Bama and LSU, but those games bookend the SEC season, and, with a ton of returning talent from a 10-win Sugar Bowl team, Arkansas should be ready to go toe-to-toe with the Tide and the Bayou Bengals in ’11. Find a way to split those and Arkansas should be back in BCS Bowl consideration, again.

Also, interestingly, CBS pretty much admitted its mistake and moved the Arkansas/LSU game back to the Friday after Thanksgiving. It was on the Saturday after Thanksgiving the last two seasons after tradtionally being a Friday affair.

The Idiot Box

The Return of American Idol

It’s back but he is not.  Tomorrow, American Idol returns for its 10th season.  But unless you’re just now emerging from that rock, you know that Simon Cowell is not returning.  Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi are not returning either.  They will be replaced by two music industry heavyweights, Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler and pop legend, Jennifer Lopez.  More on them later but first… Simon.

Simon Cowell defined the show.  It was his acerbic, brutally honest comments on the contestants’ performances that drove the show and more importantly the water cooler comments the next day at work.  Cowell is a record producer.  He had the credibility to give honest assessments but more importantly he lacked the fear of being labeled a “meanie” or being reviled by viewers and contestants alike.  As much as it might bother host Ryan “Dim the Lights” Seacrest, Cowell was the face of Idol.  No matter how good Tyler and Lopez are, they will always be compared to Cowell or at the least will cause long time viewers to pine for the days when Simon would skewer an off-putting performance.

The credibility that Cowell had was what put Ellen DeGeneres behind the eight ball from the start.  DeGeneres is a comedian, actress and talk show host.  From the get-go she was questioned as to why she was even there. Kara DioGuardi was most known for her work as a songwriter and record producer but she struggled trying to find her role. She eventually replaced Paula Abdul after Abdul left due to a contract dispute but DioGuardi could not decide if she wanted to be the sweet, “nice try” judge or if she wanted to take the line that her record producer colleague Simon Cowell had drawn.  Either way, she never really found her way.  The only returning judge is Randy “Dawg” Jackson.  He and Seacrest will try to maintain the continuity of the show but it’s the chemistry between Jackson and the new judges that will be immediately critiqued.

New Idol judges, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, some random zombie

Steven Tyler has probably taken the most heat for this career move. His own band mates are not thrilled with it.  Joe Perry even went so far as to state that he did not want the name “Aerosmith” associated with the show.  He has a problem with the fact that it is reality TV designed to sell ads.  In an ironic twist though, Perry said that he was still OK with contestants singing Aerosmith songs… from which he earns royalties.  Actress, dancer and recording artist Jennifer Lopez seems to be a less surprising but also less interesting.  She certainly has the cred they were looking for.  Jenny From the Block has been on the stage since her time as a “Fly Girl” on In Living Color.  Since then she has recorded seven albums and acted in numerous movies and TV shows. She has won AMA’s, Latin Grammys and numerous other awards.  She is certainly qualified but will people watch?

There are several other changes for this year’s edition of Idol.  The head of the Interscope Geffen and A&M label, Jimmy Iovine will serve as an in-house mentor to the contestants.  There will not be celebrity mentors as in years past.  They also plan to extend Hollywood Week which will cut the field of semi-finalists down to 20.  Executive Producer Simon Lythgoe also said that theme weeks will be broader to allow contestants a wider variety of song choices.

While American Idol’s ratings were down last year, it is still the juggernaut that all other show producers respect and fear.  Time will tell if the new faces and changes will change that or if Idol will continue its phenomenal dominance.

Randy says I am "pitchy."

Today’s Hate Remniscent of a Time That Should Have Been Left Behind

Posted by Adam Butler on January 17, 2011

This is  a timely piece on MLK Day on CNN.com.

The hate unfortunately seems to be pretty pervasive right now. I can’t decide if it’s racial or political or both. I was appalled last week when several Razorback fans on a message board I am on were publicly bemoaning the fact that one of the worst Razorback games in a long line of stinkers the last decade was briefly preempted on KATV in Little Rock by President Obama’s speech at a Memorial Service in Tuscon.

The haters called the speech, among other things, “political manipulation” as if President Obama wouldn’t have been ripped by those same people had he decided against such a speech.

Stated another way, even I didn’t whine about President George W. Bush’s speeches in the wake of tragedies that occured during his presidency.

NWC Report for 1/14/11

Posted by Jeff on January 14, 2011

After recent episodes of violence at council and board meetings around the country, Springdale will now have a uniformed officer at its city meetings.

The Towerhouse off of Old Wire Road in Fayetteville.

The Towerhouse, one of Fayetteville’s most unique homes, has been broken into several times of late but police think they caught the intruder.

Newly elected House Representative, Steve Womack says he will not let the events of Tucson last week change how he meets and greets voters.

The Centerton city council member who was allegedly threatened by another council member and who had resigned from her position is now back on the council.  Apparently during her hiatus her seat was up and she was re-elected.

On Monday several Rogers families were fooled by a fake Twitter account that reported school was closed due to weather.  Local station KNWA even reported it on the Sunday night broadcast.

The smallest Wal-Mart in the world just opened on the campus of the UofA.

It’s official!  We now have a Waffle House on Dickson St.  You can get it smothered, covered, and chunked inside Underwood Plaza.

Remember the Butcher Block Steakhouse?  How about S & J Seafood?  Well the building that once housed them both is going to finally be razed along with the former Bill & Tony’s Liquor. A Kum & Go convenience store will be built on that corner.

The annual Paint the Town Red fundraiser for the American Heart Association is Saturday.  The “party with a purpose” is usually one of the more entertaining of these fancy balls.

Apparently Arkansas Offensive Coordinator Garrick McGee will not be heading to Tulsa.

A Must Read on UA Head Basketball Coach John Pelphrey

Posted by Adam Butler on January 12, 2011

and his friends and colleagues, Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan and Alabama Head Coach Anthony Grant.

Don’t read this, though, unless you want a large dose of perspective, and probably a tear or two (dozen).

Many of our readers who know me are aware that my wife and I are in this club, I share this info and this article because I know that some of you are in the club, too, and understand the pain that membership brings.

It should be no surprise that the main difference in how I handled it was that I was much more bitter than Pel and Company. I wish I had the kind of positive spin they did.

I just can’t convince myself of some things But, I do think that I’ll become one of Pel’s Pals. It’s a wonderful cause. And, while I’m at it, I also think I’ll go home today and give Will B. about 300 hugs.

“It’s an unfortunate club to belong to, the club for parents who have lost a child,” Horst Ferrero
said. “Only those who have gone through that experience can really understand how shocking it
can be. Maybe that’s one of the reasons he became so passionately involved.”

Les Gets More From LSU

Posted by Adam Butler on January 12, 2011

This is shocking.

A day after maybe, kinda, sorta spurning his alma mater, Michigan, The Mad Hatter, LSU Head Coach Les Miles, who, given his well-chronicled struggles, already had one of the best deals in college football, squeezed out more dollars than the number of commas in this sentence.

That’s not what shocks me, though. I am shocked that he can count from (20)11 to (20)17.
