The Mississippi Coach

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 20, 2010

Has the anti-Nutt fervor died down in the past two years?  A reasonable question for a Mississippi beat writer (and former Hogs beat writer) to ask.  The coach’s answer is, predictably, circuitous.

“You know, I don’t know. I think it’s probably died down a little bit,” said Nutt, who is 2-0 against Arkansas as the Ole Miss coach. “But I don’t know. I’m sure that there’s a few people that naturally want to see that, but you know, again, the thing about the SEC that I’m more concerned with is because our league is so tough and so good, you better be focused on the task at hand.”

It is, after all, a two-chin strap league.

Quick Hits

Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 20, 2010

I’m going to be out most of the day today, so Adam and Jeff will try to feed the beast.  Here are some things to get you started:

The Rangers are just one win away from the franchise’s first trip to the World Series after last night’s clubbing of the New York Yankees.

Bengie Molina hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off A.J. Burnett in the sixth inning, Josh Hamiltonadded a pair of solo drives to give him four in four games and the Rangers battered the Yankees 10-3 Tuesday night for a 3-1 ALCS lead.
“It’s not bad for a fat kid that everyone makes fun of when he runs,” Molina said.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants have a 2-1 lead over the Phillies heading into tonight’s Game Four in San Fran.

The last time this franchise won it all was in 1954, as the New York Giants. On a team that included future Hall of Famer Willie Mays and other big-name players, it was a part-time outfielder who hit .253 in his career — Dusty Rhodes — who emerged as the Series star with two homers in six at-bats.

It turns out that John Blake could be the most dangerous man (no longer) in college football.

Former University of North Carolina assistant coach John Blake played a role in the signing of at least two clients of NFL agent Gary Wichard, according to two players who experienced the relationship firsthand.

Two former Wichard clients – linebacker Brian Bosworth and tight end Stephen Alexander – told Yahoo! Sports that Blake was the conduit for their relationship with the prominent agent. Blake coached both players during his tenure at the University of Oklahoma. Wichard is currently under investigation by the NCAA, NFL Players Association and North Carolina Secretary of State for potential improper agent conduct. A third former Oklahoma player, defensive end Stirling Luckey, told Yahoo! Sports that he had knowledge of Blake’s endorsement of Wichard to elite Sooners players.

The NFL doled out some hefty fines this week for some serious hits leveled on Sunday.  Suspensions are on the table starting this week.

Brandon MeriweatherDunta Robinson and James Harrison are a lot lighter in the wallet after today — the NFL announced that Meriweather and Robinson will be fined $50,000 and Harrison will be fined $75,000, for their “devastating” hits from Sunday.

When are coaches going to ban players from Twitter, Facebook, etc?  Kentucky’s Randall Cobb is the latest to apologize for losing his mind online.

His tweets after the game said:

“To all the fans: loved seein Yall come late, love hearing Yall tell us we suck during the game, love that we have to play against our own fans too! Love that we can’t pack the house when we play the 10 team in the nation. It means that much more to me. I love my team! Brotherhood they got my back n I got they back. The rest of Yall can get ready for bball season! Don’t say u support n do all those things! Yeah I’m level 9 (upset)… so deal w it! Not blaming all but Yall know who I’m talking abt- Yall know I love bbn but something needed to be said.”
