Mallett Slides after Week One

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 7, 2010

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett is ranked #6 in this week’s HeismanPundit.com poll.  Despite his stellar performance last week, Mallett actually dropped a spot.  Chalk that up to the fact that very few people outside the state could 1) confirm Arkansas actually played this week or 2) name the team the Hogs defeated.

This will be a fun game all year.  Everyone knows his big game is in 11 days when the Hogs head to Georgia.

Given the debate that has raged today on this board, I’m sure none of you will be happy to know that Kellen Moore is the leader after Week 1 in this tracking poll.  He and Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor are the clear leaders.  According to one voter, it’s Kellan’s (as Brent Mussberger would call him) to lose.

“That was one of the most memorable opening-day performances in college football history.  In one week, Kellen Moore has become the clear Heisman favorite. He is the little quarterback for the little team that could.” — Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel.

Google’s Suggested Searches for the Mississippi Coach.

Posted by Adam Butler on September 7, 2010

I promise that I have not doctored this in any way, and that I cleared my Google History before doing it (to buffer against my bias). Try it for yourself. And, with that, even I am spent on Mississippi Coach bashing for today.

Finebaum: Loss to JSU Makes Houston Nutt a Joke

Posted by Adam Butler on September 7, 2010

*nodding*

(Although I could easily argue the Mississippi Coach has been a made man in that department for quite some time).

From Finebaum: (Full column here)

Is anyone wondering how long it will be before Nutt is searching the coaching yellow pages trying to get another job? Nutt had a roving eye at Arkansas, even sitting on a plane on the tarmac in Fayetteville about to head to Nebraska to be the next coach. He slow danced with LSU several times. At Ole Miss, he had friends feverishly working the phones trying to get him the Auburn job after Tommy Tuberville left. Last year, it was Kansas. His flirtations and his propensity to underperform finally got him pushed out at Arkansas. At Ole Miss, it has been déjà vu all over again.

Hogs Move Up In Polls

Posted by Adam Butler on September 7, 2010

"I Should Have Gone to Jacksonville State."

But I really have to wonder about the validity of the AP and Coaches’ Polls when Jacksonville St. and Euless Trinity didn’t receive any votes.

Select 17 – Week 2

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 7, 2010

Finally, we have some games on the field to help us get some understanding on the college football season.  The first week did not deliver any grand answers, but I think we all learned quite a bit.  While the talk today centers around Boise St. and their big win, there were a few other winners and losers.  Ohio St., Iowa, and the rest of the Big 10 showed themselves pretty well.  The Big East laid a big egg, though, calling into question yet again why they are an automatic qualifier to the BCS.

Big games coming up this weekend, starting out Thursday with Auburn and Mississippi State in Starkville.  Ohio St./Miami, Notre Dame/Michigan, and Penn St./Alabama promise to be solid efforts, too.  The most intriguing to me, though, is early in the day with Georgia & South Carolina.  Each of those games will certainly affect the balloting for Week Three.

As for this week…

  1. Ohio St. (4) 131         1
  2. Alabama (3)        124         2
  3. Boise St. (1)        108         4
  4. TCU                        97           9
  5. Iowa                      93           8
  6. Texas                    91           6
  7. Nebraska             84           7
  8. Florida                  81           3
  9. Oklahoma           77           5
  10. Wisconsin            60           11
  11. Oregon                 54           14
  12. Miami (FL)           53           12
  13. Arkansas              51           13
  14. Virginia Tech      27           10
  15. Penn St.               24           17
  16. Georgia Tech     22           15
  17. Florida St.            10           NR

Others Receiving Votes:  Georgia 9, Auburn 8, Texas A&M 5, Pittsburgh 4, Southern Cal 4, West Virginia 3, Arizona 3, Jacksonville St. 1, Euless (TX) Trinity 1

ESPN SEC Blogger Chris Low’s Week 1 Power Rankings

Posted by Adam Butler on September 7, 2010

I think there are gonna be some disappointed Land Sharks in Mississippi (where hope for an on-field Land Shark mascot lives).

Speaking of disappointment, doesn’t the cheesy ESPN/Mississippi/Admiral Ackbar commercial running the week after Missisippi was “The Citadeled” by Jacksonville State only make it 100xs worse for Land Shark Nation?
