Boise St. pulled out a great win in what was really an entertaining (if a bit sloppy) game. Big, big ups to Virginia Tech for coming back all the way after laying an egg in the first quarter. Now the Broncos have a week off, a trip to Wyoming for a likely win, then home for Oregon St. Assuming they survive those two games, Boise will be in control of their own destiny. A BCS game a certainty, and a legitimate shot at the BCS Championship Game.
I’ll keep Boise at the top of my ballot this week. I’m not as sold on them as I was, but they were able to go on the road and beat a legit Top 10 team without playing its best game. It’s a clear statement that they are clearly in the national title hunt. Short of some circumstances I cannot imagine right now, two BCS conference teams will have to be perfect to keep Boise St. out.
Probably the biggest thing I have learned in the past few weeks is this: Boise St. has become a poisonously divisive topic. The Broncos are the abortion/gun rights/stem cells of college football. It’s basically impossible to change the minds of those against Boise St. And short of some empirical evidence to disprove their belief, people who support Boise are just as dug-in.
A team that once captured the imagination of college football has now divided it.
