Weekend One Reactions

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 5, 2010

Consider this an “Open Line” to talk about this weekend’s football feast.  I think most of us will be spending time with the family over the next 2 days, but feel free to get into it if you have some free time.

What did we learn yesterday?

For Razorback fans, I think the win over Tennessee Tech did just about everything you wanted.  The start was a bit sluggish, but that is hardly unusual for the first game of the season.  In the end, Ryan Mallett looked like a Heisman candidate.  Two of his three incomplete passes could easily have been caught.  He checked down to running backs and his tight end, but he still found Joe Adams enough for the junior from Little Rock to have a career-best receiving day.

The defense was very strong, shutting down Tennessee Tech completely after their first possession.  For a team like Arkansas that needs a mental boost on the defensive side of the ball, this is just what the doctor ordered.  I suspect the coaches will have plenty to correct off of film and get these guys ready to tighten things up before ULM next weekend.

Elsewhere the biggest story is the huge loss in Oxford.  I have to question my own character based on just how happy it made me to see ol’ Hootie get embarrassed at home after the Masoli fiasco.  This is sweet, sweet justice.  We tried and tried to warn Mississippi fans about their head coach’s track record, but they refused to listen.  I have been relegated to “read-only” status on their Scout.com message board and have been for more than a year now.  I guess some folks just don’t want to be helped.

Texas and Florida looked quite lackluster, largely because of their inefficiency toting the rock.  As I noted last week, I think both are overrated this season based on past success.  They’ll be contenders again next season, but both schools look to be about 9 win teams this year.

Rich Rodriguez and Brian Kelly both picked up big wins, setting up a fun game next weekend.

Two of the most impressive team performances came from Ohio St. and Miami (FL) on Thursday night.  That’s another big one next weekend.

In the SEC, I’m already looking forward to South Carolina and Georgia next weekend.  It’s too bad that the SEC brain trust has decided to kick that one off early in the day.

Tomorrow night is the big night with Boise St. taking on Virginia Tech.  I’ll find some combo of blue and orange to wear in my living room.

Feel free to post your thoughts on the weekend here.  Hopefully you have a life and can spend your holiday weekend doing something other than sitting in front of a computer.
