As Expected, Zack Cox & Drew Smyly Join Brett Eibner in Hogs Millionaire Boys Club

Posted by Adam Butler on August 17, 2010

Zack Cox is a Cardinal.

Just before the 11 p.m. deadline 3B Zack Cox (25th overall pick) signed with the St. Louis Cardinals (numbers have not been announced but the signing bonus is rumored to be in the $3 million range, along with a major league deal and a spot on the 40-man roster, which means he will probably be in St. Louis by 2012).

UA ace SP Drew Smyly, the Detroit Tigers’ 2nd round pick, signed for a cool $1.1 million. Both Cox and Smyly were draft-eligible sophomores who could have returned to Fayetteville and theoretically  had leverage once again next season.

The biggest bright spots for the Hogs today were that Seattle Mariners 3rd-round pick Ryne Stanek, a right handed, fireballing high school starting pitcher and UA signee did not sign with Seattle, and will be a Razorback. Stanek will be one of the most highly touted freshmen in college baseball next season.

Collin Kuhn, the Hogs’ leadoff man, and a 15th-round 2010 draft pick with speed and power, also did not sign, and will return to Fayetteville and likely move into the middle of the Arkansas batting order.

Others players who signed with the Hogs and were drafted by MLB teams, but did not sign are infielder Dominic Ficociello (23rd round), OF/P Nolan Sanburn (34th round) 1B/OF Sam Bates (39th round) and LHP Jeff Harvill (40th round).

As a point of reference, 2010 1st-round pick, Cox, was a 20th-round pick in the 2008 draft. Eibner, a 2010 2nd-round pick, was taken in the 4th round in 2007, while 1B Andy Wilkins (5th-round pick this year) was taken in the 25th round in 2007 and Smyly was undrafted out of Little Rock Central.

BREAKING NEWS: GATOR HAT GATE 2010 TAKES A COLD-BLOODED TURN

Posted by Adam Butler on August 16, 2010

Gork didn't wear this to the UA Press Conference Saturday, but maybe should should have gotten her money's worth.

The good folks at Arkansassports360.com are reporting that Hog Sports Radio employee Renee Gork has been fired.

They do a better job than I will of re-”cap”ping the situation, but for those who missed it, Gork, a Florida grad, made the really dumb decision to wear a Gators cap to a UA press conference this weekend and ask the Head Hog, Bobby Petrino, a question. Petrino answered, but wasn’t happy, and let her know it.

Hog fans everywhere didn’t appreciate it, or other public comments she allegedly made about her job covering the Hogs (as opposed to the Gators), either. After several complaints, Capshaw was fired.

I personally don’t think the hat thing is a big deal but I am sure her employers didn’t like all the attention, or even the implication that she might be a Florida wonk that would prefer wonking for Florida.

It was a dumb mistake–particularly when you add in the fact that she is a Gator alum, and the Hogs lost were jobbed in Gainesville last year.

Arkansas in ESPN’s 2011 College Football Recruiting Top 20

Posted by Adam Butler on August 16, 2010

For those of you who don’t follow recruiting, even when Arkansas has a good class, they are never ranked this highly  (especially this early in the process) by ESPN and other national outlets.  This is primarily because those services generally don’t get down here to evaluate as many players as they do in other, more fertile recruiting areas.

SCOTUS Affirms Decision of Judge to Fine “Birther” Attorney

Posted by Adam Butler on August 16, 2010

The attorney in question was fined pursuant to Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. My Civil Procedure professor (a very smart man from West Texas) explained Rule 11 to us succintly when he said it means, “Don’t make shit up.”

Arkansas Baseball MLB Signing Day Deadline Blog

It’s shaping up to be a bloody day for Hog Baseball. Zack Cox, Brett Eibner and Drew Smyly should sign.  Collin Kuhn looks like he is coming back to school. Ryne Stanek is one to watch. He is a stud. My guess is he signs, too.

NWC Report 8/13/10: Six Flags Over Jesus Student Pastor Fired Following Alleged Unauthorized Ride

Posted by Adam Butler on August 13, 2010

per this report from Fox’s nwahomepage.com (check out that banner ad at the top).

OK, to be fair, First Baptist in Springdale is  one of the real “Six Flags Over Jesus” and Pinnacle Hills is more like its water park.  But, “More Flags, More Fun!”

Six Flags is Fun.

Senior Pastor Ronnie Floyd was in Dallas earlier Thursday for a speaking engagement; however, he cut that short and came home to deal with the crisis. He’s expected to address the church congregation this Sunday.

Is this really a crisis? If the building fund comes up short is that a crisis? The inordinate amount of churches that are destroyed across the country by arson might be a crisis. Gay people being allowed to have the same rights as everyone else might be a crisis.

But, a student pastor being arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution? I’m not sure that warrants the crisis label. I am confident it will add some vigor to Floyd’s fundraising, though.

In other Northwest Corridor news:

It may not be football season, yet, but there is still plenty to do this weekend in the land of strawberries and creme.

At Least They Can Spell “Football” in Alabama

Posted by Adam Butler on August 13, 2010

and we’re the dumb ones?

It’s so easy even the Mississippi Rebels Coach can spell it–although he probably spells it like this:

UA Football Season Ticket (Donation) Prices Going Up

Posted by Adam Butler on August 11, 2010

This is not a suprise. UA Athletic Director Jeff Long might as well change his name to “Revenue Stream” and now (while excitement over Hog football is, as it should be, very high) is the time to do this. I have no problem with it. In fact, we may up our donation in an attempt to capitalize on some folks dropping out.

If we want to be an upper tier SEC program, we have to have the resources. And, right now, relative to the rest of the league, our revenue is not lagging. So, I’ll pay this football tax without much gripping.

This Houston Astros Fan Should Turn in His Man Card

Posted by Adam Butler on August 10, 2010

I can’t decide what’s worse:

  • Sideways Camo Hat with odd lettering;
  • Diving out of the way of a foul ball like a little girl;
  • Letting your way-too-cute for you girlfriend get drilled by the liner;
  • Talking about it before the game with her, and still wimping out;
  • Being named Bo;
  • Being called a “little chicken” by the sideline reporter (What do you call those in baseball?) with pig tails that she seems a bit too old for;
  • wearing sunglasses at night, indoors, while your way-too-cute-for-you girlfriend tells a regional audience that she might have to reconsider her decision to be your way-too-cute-for-you girlfriend.

BlogHawgs Bad Announcing Hall of Fame–”I Voted For Pedro” Edition

Posted by Adam Butler on August 9, 2010

I know it must be difficult to suffer through Pittsburgh Pirates games on a daily basis, but Pittsburgh radio guys Greg Brown (play by play) and the giggly Steve Blass (color) (who has been known to lose control before) lost their minds this weekend in response to a walkoff home run by Pedro Alvarez for a team that is currently 39-72 and 24.5 games out of 1st place in the NL Central. My favorite part is Blass’ fingers-in-mouth whistling. Classic.

Generally Speaking…

Posted by Jeff on August 7, 2010

(Another rant from the quiet one.)

Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin

Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin is an Army flight surgeon and apparently has been a pretty good career soldier. But now he has nominated himself to be the likely martyr for the birthers. Lakin is among the reported 27% (in some polls) that do not believe that President Obama was born in the United States. There are three video links in this CNN report. In one of them, Anderson Cooper tries to get Lakin to tell him why a “Certificate of Live Birth” from Hawaii is insufficient in his mind to prove Obama is a U.S. citizen by birth. Cooper could barely get Lakin to respond for his lawyer’s intervention but one question I would have asked is, “did you ask to see President George W. Bush’s birth certificate?” For that matter, as he has been in the service for 17 years, what about Clinton or Bush senior? What about Sarah Palin? There’s more to this than coincidental or fake Kenyan birth documents. The birthers have a scary agenda.

It really is disturbing to me that anyone really believes that Obama was not born in the U.S. But it’s frightening to me that 27% have at least some doubt. What drives this? I’d love to blame the right-wing pundits but not all of them are drinking this Kool-Aid. Last year Bill O’Reilly, who fathered the current craze of television conservative punditry, called Orly Taitz a “nut.” Taitz of course is the non-commissioned loon that has sued just about every person that has ever crossed her or breathed funny. She also was slapped with a $20,000 fine for frivolous lawsuits. She has appealed numerous suits to the Supreme Court and she can’t even get Clarence Thomas to stay a judgment against her. She’s crazy and if Bill O’Reilly doesn’t buy what you’re selling, then maybe you need to tilt at a different windmill.

Anyway, Lakin is also tilting but his battle is more newsworthy given his position, rank, and interest in taking the role of birther poster child. Lakin posted a YouTube video explaining why he is refusing to deploy for another tour in Afghanistan. Yesterday Lakin asked to defer his plea in his court martial until the judge rules on a request to have the case thrown out. The judge gave Lakin two weeks to file the motion. If it is not dismissed, Lakin’s case will begin in October.

All of this spurred me to dig up my own birth certificate. What I have is not the actual certificate. It is a “Certification of Birth Registration” from Henry County, Iowa, U.S.A. It states that I was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa on January 16th, 1970 at 11:40 a.m. and that it is recorded in the courthouse records. There are a number of other details that aren’t relevant but that’s about it. I have used this exact document for a number of things. I used it to get an Arkansas Drivers License. I used it get a replacement social security card. And I used it to get a United States passport. Not one person ever doubted its veracity. Of course I would never say that what I have done or do now is as important as being the President of the United States but if I were to run I suppose I could not command this soldier unless I trot up to Henry County, Iowa and ask the clerk to dust off my book and turn to my page. Or would I have to be ultra-conservative too…?

Here’s the real problem I have with this. This Lakin character along with Taitz and all of the other birthers are disrespecting the president and a host of other people in an inane plot to simply rouse the rabble because they don’t like Obama’s politics (or maybe worse reasons.) Lakin is disrespecting the Republican governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle who stated “the president was, in fact, born at Kapi’olani Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii.” He is disrespecting the entire state of Hawaii really. He is also disrespecting every member of the military who chooses to trust the documentation from Hawaii and the vote of the people of the United States and who thereby serve President Obama as Commander in Chief.

Friday Fodder

Posted by Brett Kincaid on August 6, 2010

The USA Today/Coaches’ Poll was released early this morning, and Alabama was unsurprisingly ranked #1 by a wide margin.  Also unsurprisingly, Ohio State was ranked #2 to open the season.  I actually am pretty bullish on Ohio State and the Big Ten in general this year.  While the conference overall is not as strong as the SEC, they are making gains.  Iowa and Ohio State are both legit Top 10 teams, and Penn State – even with a lot to replace – will probably merit a Top 25 ranking all year.

The Razorbacks enter the season ranked #19.  That sounds about right for a team that still has to prove it on defense.  I’ll probably have them in my Select 17 when we roll it out in a couple of weeks, but I’m not willing to put them in the Top 10 just yet.

Probably the biggest surprise to me is that Florida is ranked #3 in this poll.  Are the voters just unsure of what to do with this team?  I suppose Florida is a Top 10 team, but they have a lot to prove this year.

Something tells me this is going to look a lot like the 2007 season where it’s a crapshoot until the very end.  I would not be surprised to see a team come from nowhere (like USF in ’07) to hang around the Top 5 this year.  I also think this is the year that Boise State makes the BCS Championship Game if they run the table.  There will be too many one-loss teams out there, and the cries will be deafening to put the Broncos back in Glendale where they pulled off the miracle win over Oklahoma.

Speaking of OU, are they for real this year?  Phil Steele loves Oklahoma this season, and I can see why.  They have a schedule that provides them with marque games that are not impossible.  Basically if they beat Texas, I think OU has a great chance to run the table.  Obviously if OU is undefeated, they’ll be in the BCS Championship Game.  Could we have an OU/BSU rematch?

Oh the things we consider in early August…

NWC Report for 8/6/10

Posted by Jeff on August 6, 2010

Given my triple extra manliness will I have to pay more to get a ride down Dickson?

Good morning, BlogHawg Nation. Slow week up here but a few things worth seeing.

The Bella Vista bypass is once again just a dream thanks to Missouri waffling this time.

At least this weird idea was not Fayetteville’s. They’re just approving it. Rickshaw anyone?

Fayetteville is now going to chalk Block

This was an interesting article about “cursed” restaurant venues.

An interview with Abel Tomlinson. You’ll recall he is the former tree-sitting shroomer that is running for the state house. Enjoy.

Like them or not. This is where it all started.

Fayetteville is renaming the street where Bill & Hillary lived and got married in his honor.

The Fayetteville Flyer did a great job breaking down Fayetteville’s WAC expansion proposal along with the 24 others as well.

Have a great weekend.

Bama Boots Defensive Back

Posted by Brett Kincaid on August 4, 2010

Sophomore Rod Woodson is no longer a member of the Alabama football team.  Coach Saban calls the separation “mutual,” but I have my doubts based on this quote:

“We cannot make decisions about the future of players who aren’t accountable for what they’re supposed to do and not responsible to what they’re supposed to do as a member of this team, regardless of what the issue is — behavioral, academic, football-related.”

Alabama certainly has plenty of depth, but they now get a little thin at safety – a spot where they already have to replace starter Justin Woodall.
