Heisman Pundit

Posted by Brett Kincaid on August 30, 2010

The folks over at heismanpundit.com released their own preseason poll this week.  Thirteen actual Heisman voters from across the country contribute to this weekly staple.  They each submit 3 names, and it essentially works like any other college football poll.

Historically Heisman Pundit has been a pretty accurate predictor.  Mark Ingram, the reigning champ, kicks off the season atop their poll.  Makes sense to me.  Arkansas’s Ryan Mallett starts the season tied for fifth.  Not a bad place to be, if you ask me.

If you put up the numbers, are clearly the best player in the country, and your team wins, you will win the Heisman–unless Tim Tebow is on the ballot.

ESPN had a Heisman show on last Friday I believe. They had their Top 10. RM was not even in their Top 10?!?!?! How do you blow it that bad? They had Christian Ponder from FSU on their list. What?!?!?! The guy had 14 TD’s last year.

You didn’t know?? It was a list of the Top 10 Heisman candiadates named Christian.

Trust me, the hype in Arkansas about Mallett and the Hogs this year is the same thing as what’s happening here in Tallahassee with the ‘Noles and Ponder. I didn’t see the ESPN show, so I don’t know who I’d say “take off” for RM, but I don’t necessarily think Ponder’s a bad choice. 14 TDs, yes, but he missed the last 3 games (maybe 3 1/2 – can’t remember when he got hurt). I think he completed like 70% of his passes. It’s a new regime in CrimiNole World. I think the two teams could mirror each other. Mallett should have been on there, no doubt. I just don’t know if Ponder’s that bad of an option. Again, didn’t see it, so don’t know. He’ll be good for Jimbo. I fear a bowl game matchup is looming in my final year here at FSU.

I’ll eat my hat if Ponder has more TD’s and yards than Mallett. Ask yourself this… if you go down the list and ask “Who is more deserving of being on a preseason Heisman watch list?”… do you really place Christian Ponder over RM?

Of course I don’t place Ponder in over RM, and no, Ponder won’t have more yards or TD’s than Ponder. I just meant that of all the people mentioned (which I admitted I hadn’t seen), Ponder’s not that bad of a choice. Let me put it better. I think Ponder’s a better Heisman candidate than Andrew Luck or Jake Locker. It won’t shock me if Ponder is in the Top 10 of voting at the end of the season. That’s all I meant.

How Mallett isn’t even mentioned, beyond me.

I tried to find something on that ESPN Hesiman Preview show online and could not find anything. I think I have their top 10 here, though. But, like Weidman said, they talked about 20+ players and RM was never mentioned.

        1. Mark Ingram-had some of the worst stats ever for a Heisman winning RB. Stats will be worse for 2010 with Richardson getting more touches.

        2. Terrelle Pryor-ESPN’s quote: “If the junior QB plays in the rest of 2010 the way that he played on Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl, then he will attend the Heisman ceremony in December.” Wow. What insight. You mean to tell me that if Pryor has a CAREER game EVERY single week that he will attend the Heisman ceremony? Great reporting.

        3. Kellen Moore-Legit. Great numebrs last year and will have great numbers this year. If Boise wins, he is a legit candidate.

        4. Joshua Nesbitt-I’m not going to knock Nesbitt too much. He should be on this list. He could potentially put up some great numbers and if he has great games while beating some top teams then he should be in the mix. However, that being said, add up his rushing and passing numbers and he still does not approach RM’s numbers last year.

        5. Christian Ponder-Maybe he deserves to be on this list. Maybe not. However, I think EVERYONE can agree he should not be on it over RM.

        6. Case Keenum-Should be on this list if you think David Klingler and Ty Detmer were solid Heisman winners. Putting up Techmo Bowl numbers on NW State, Tulsa, UTEP, Rice, etc. is not my idea of a heisman Trophy winner. Although, he did have great games against Okie State and East Carolina. But his Ty Detmer (200 yds, 6 picks-almost identical) performance in their Bowl game leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

        7. Jake Locker-Really? I mean, I get that he is a prototypical NFL QB, but does that make you a Heisman Trophy candidate? Mediocre numbers (2800 yds, 21 TD’s, 11 int’s) against weak defenses in the PAC-10 + a losing reocrd (5-7) do not = Heisman.

        8. Dion Lewis-This dude is exciting. He put up awesome numbers as a freshman last year and (imo) should be the top RB on this list.

        9. Andrew Luck-What? I mean, I am kind of speechless on this one.

        10. Julio Jones-Can we stop already? He is not even the best WR in his own conference. He might not even be in the top 3. He drops balls. For a supposed 4.3 forty guy, he hardly ever blows past people. Saban does not go to him in the crunch time. That tells me a lot.

    • Andy Weidman said

Not only was he not in the top 10, he was not mentioned the ENTIRE show. They listed up to 30 different candidates and he wasn’t listed. Although I don’t agree, not having him in the top 10 can be somewhat argued based on the fact you also have to be on one of the top teams and most people belieive the SEC is Bama and FL. Somehting is horribly wrong when you devote an entire 30min program to possible contenders and 30 players are either mentioned directly or listed on a graphic and Mallett is not included. They either pulled some poor production assistant over from ESPN Deportes to compile the list at the last minute or contrated it out to a local Atlanta station.

They listed a guy from Middle Tennessee who isn’t even eligible right now and a guy from one of the service academies.

It was actually kind of amazing–almost like Mallett had originally been mentioned, then they made an edit or something, and forgot to add him back into the mix.

More importantly is this Christian Ponder related to the infamous Jacob Ponder?

Didn’t catch the show myself. However, there is talk on the extraterrestrial radio and the message boards about an interview with Mallet on on of the ESPiN stations re: Heisman Campaign.

Maybe (hopefully) he’ll be getting some PR push from the folks in the Hog Front office, if they’re not too busy collecting more money from us for our tickets this year.

Nice Breskdown, Boyd but you missed a great naming opportunity-”Mallett Not in the Heisman Top 30? That’s LudaKris”.

    Oh, that’s been used already?
