More Masoli

Worth the Trouble?

We’re going wall-to-wall at BlogHawgs.com on the Jeremiah Masoli situation.

George Schroeder is quickly becoming a BlogHawgs favorite.  The Southern boy gone Oregon has reliably good stuff on college football, especially all things Masoli.  His take today asks a very good question:  Does Jeremiah Masoli really deserve another chance after having burned so many?

Beyond the moral questions of letting a troubled yet talented kid play football, there are some really shady things happening behind the scenes here.  The critical line from Schroeder’s column today is this:

In essence, the coach wants to lure a big-name free agent for one season, because no one is seriously suggesting Masoli plans to hang around and earn a graduate degree.

This is the central problem.  No one in his or her right mind believes Masoli is going to get his graduate degree from Mississippi.  The have found a loophole to bring in a quarterback for a coach that has continually run off talent.  His backup quarterback transfered, and his “franchise” from last year decided to roll his dice with the NFL rather than stay one more year in Oxford.  Snead did not get drafted, but he is still probably closer to playing in the NFL than he would have been given one more season at Mississippi.

But I digress…

The ultimate frustration here is that the NCAA has a loophole that will be exploited by a desperate coach and a felon quarterback.  And there is nothing that anyone can do about it.  Ultimately the University of Mississippi may decide that their school’s integrity is more valuable than 7-8 wins on the gridiron this year.  Given their past, though, I doubt this institution of “higher learning” cares too much what the outside world thinks.

I’m still somewhat surprised that Nutt decided to okay Masoli. I wonder if there was pressure above him to get Masoli on the team. You’ve got to believe Nutt is scrambling now and already rewriting his excuses for his coaches show.

Leaving all the other stuff aside, I wonder how this affects the football team.

How can a guy come into a team dynamic as the team leader – despite all his talent – and become the team leader? Didn’t the Mississippi coach watch the first season “Friday Night Lights”? This is Voodoo Tatum all over again!

I am starting to think there is more to why Cotton suddenly left. Could it be that the Ole Miss coach put out some “feelers” to Masoli’s people ealier than what is known? Really no way to know but looking back on it Cotton just kinda up and left 2 weeks before practice started.

What did we expect? This is the same University that allows too many coaches on the sideline, has a linemen who may, or may not, be able to read. And recently had a lineman that took high-school “correspondence” courses from BYU to be NCAA eligible.

It’s such a disingenuous and desperate move that it’s simply embarrassing – both for the football program and, more importantly, the institution.

And one last point – I’ve heard the defense that his possession plea shouldn’t matter because a lot of college kids smoke bud and have been caught with it. That may be true, but those kids ARE NOT USUALLY ON PROBATION FOR BURGLARY when they get caught with it – which clearly shows that he (a) has no remorse and doesn’t give a shit about the legal consequences associated what he does (the very reasons for the classic “this guy deserves another chance” rationale), or (b) is too stupid to recognize the consequences of his actions, and is thus a liability – not only legally but to the reputation of the school. Either way, his possession plea is relevant and should matter.

I don’t why a’ll got to be dogging Coach. Everything I know I learned from him. I learned that everyone needs a second chance and that it truly does not matter if you play sports or not. Everyone gets the same treatment.

What’s the over/under on the number of games Masoli will play in before being dismissed from the team for breaking into the Ole Miss weed farm? http://www.pharmacy.olemiss.edu/ncnpr/site/marijuana.html
