NWC Report for June 11, 2010

Benton County Judge Dave Bisbee’s trial ended in acquittal on two counts and a mistrial on the third. More interesting is Bisbee’s admission on the stand that he has troubles with literacy. Bisbee was soundly defeated in the Tuesday runoff by Bob Clinard.

Rogers Mayor Steve Womack defeated fellow Republican Cecile Bledsoe for the 3rd District seat to the House of Representatives.  Rogers now needs a new mayor.  My vote would be for Kelly Cradduck.  He’s a cop’s cop.

The Federal Courthouse in Fayetteville was evacuated when an envelope containing white powder was discovered. The powder was soap and the sender is an inmate who has a history of sending similar packages.

Oh Judy, I WILL pee on your leg and I WILL tell you it's raining.

Drug Court’s Mary Ann Gunn might be the next Judge Judy.  I have to admit it is hard to turn away from Drug Court.  It’s compelling TV.

The Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department is trying to set a Guinness World Record today.

Jon Williams reminisces about the passing of legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden while wondering if/when Arkansas’ legendary track coach will get similar renown.

The A-Team v. Karate Kid… Wax Off, Mr. Miagi

Posted by Jeff on June 11, 2010

We love it when a plan to destroy Will Smith's kid's movie comes together.

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire: THE A-TEAM.

When I posted about this earlier, I did not know the two 80′s revisits would hit on the same day.  Sorry Jaden Smith.  I’ll be watching the A-Team.

Rumors

Posted by Brett Kincaid on June 10, 2010

Tons of stuff out there today.  No one really knows what is happening except the power that be who are locked behind boardroom doors today.

Here is what we know:

  • Colorado has accepted a bid to the Pac-10
  • Nebraska appears headed to the Big 10 with an announcement expected tomorrow.
  • That is it.

Everything else we are hearing today deals in rumor.  I think there are some pretty good indicators out there, and the SEC is involved in some of those.  So let’s dive into the rumors:

  • Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma will join the Pac-10
  • Oklahoma will head to the SEC while Texas and A&M go to the Big 10
  • The SEC will add Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and either Miami or FSU
  • The Big XII will add TCU and Boise St to replace Nebraska and Colorado

What are your best rumors?  Anyone have good, hard info?

UA Ace and Little Rock Native Drew Smyly Picked #68 Overall in the 2010 MLB Draft

Posted by Adam Butler on June 8, 2010

by the Detroit Tigers.  The mass exodus of talent from the UA baseball team is officially in full swing.  Zack Cox and Drew Smyly are draft-eligible sophomores, meaning they could come back to school twice, but it isn’t going to happen. Eibner is long gone, too. And, I don’t blame them.  They will all be the beneficiaries of hefty signing bonuses in the coming months.

by the KC Royals, meaning Eibner could be playing in NWA in a year, and Cox could be a frequent visitor there, and in North Little Rock, too, as a Springfield Cardinal.

Finally, a Salient Anti-BCS/Pro Playoff System Argument

Posted by Adam Butler on June 8, 2010

by Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports. This column is a Tour De Force, although I am sure Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe and, (in some respects) Big 10 Commissioner Jim Delany, disagree.  See, if you want to win me over on the Playoff System, facts, realism and logic (and not the hyperbole that a Playoff system results in a more “true” champion) is the way to do it.

That said, this paragraph, made me pucker up a little until I realized that Bobby Petrino is the UA football Coach and the Mississippi Coach isn’t.

Conference expansion is about to forever alter college athletics: destroying traditions, hammering taxpayers and increasing competition. It will leave once-major programs out of the loop, consolidate power and extend the gap between haves and have nots – even within leagues such as the Big Ten.

And, wannabe shock jock sportswriter Paul Finebaum isn’t helping my heartburn with his usual drivel about Arkansas and USC-E being a “waste of space” for the SEC. It’s agenda-driven and historically inaccurate, and for those reasons, I hesitate to link  it.  But, I do so to point out that, particularly with regard to football–by the standard Finebaum applies to Arkansas and USC-E, Tennessee (his alma mater) should be considered a waste of space, too.

Then again, we are talking about a guy who rose to SEC sportswriter/radio guy prominence with a schtick that would make “Michael From Stuttgart” (AKA blowhard radio guy who calls into 15 sports radio shows a day and does everything he can to offend anyone with which he speaks) blush.

But, I digress.  My point is, I can be sold on the Playoff System if people start speaking Wetzel’s language and the SEC makes sure that Arkansas at least has the opportunity to be a “have” instead of a “have not”.

Sir Elton Serenades Sir GOP

Posted by Jeff on June 8, 2010

Will Pimp for Charity

In one of the more bizarre turn of events this weekend, Sir Elton John sang at the fourth (4) wedding of Mr. Rush Limbaugh.  Limbaugh has on many occasions spoken in anti-gay tones and has also joked about homosexuality.  John is said to have earned $1M for the gig which he will donate to charity.

This type of olive branch is not out of the ordinary for the singer. Several years ago he performed a duet with Eminem even after the rapper had bashed John and gays in general.

I was going to post Keith Olbermann’s take on this but he ended it with one of those awful “comedian” interviews in which Keith puts up softballs for D-List comic hacks to swing away at. Last night it was Michael Musto who – if it were not for Paula Poundstone – would be the least funny person on Earth.  He was also borderline offensive.  Even Keith was trying to backtrack.  Nothing ruins a good Countdown more than Michael Musto.

Hogs Whip Washington State 7-2 to Win Fayetteville Regional

Posted by Adam Butler on June 7, 2010

and advance to play National Number 1 seed Arizona State (47-8) in Tempe next weekeend. Two of (the real) ASU’s 8 losses this season came at the hands of Washington State–the team Arkansas just beat for the 6th time in 7 games over the last 2 seasons.

But, with it’s two superstars–Zack Cox and Brett Eibner–far from 100% healthy, an already tough task will be all but impossible next weekend for the Hogs.

NCAA Baseball, Fayetteville Regional–Monday

Posted by Adam Butler on June 7, 2010

Arkansas Needs a Kirk Gibsonian Effort From Brett Eibner, tonight.

The Washington State Cougars rallied from 6-1 down against Kansas State yesterday, and then forced a do-or die showdown with Arkansas at 7pm at Baum Stadium tonight after taking advantage of the Razorbacks’ atrocious defense to take a 10-7 win in Sunday’s late game at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional.

Arkansas did something I have never seen a HIGH SCHOOL team,  much less a College World Series-caliber college team do–fail to get even  ONE out on FOUR different WSU bunts, drop an Infield Fly Rule popup allowing two runners to advance, and then boot a tailor-made double play that could have kept the Hogs in the game.

Call me crazy, but it seems like the Cougars feel they have this one in the bag.  Both teams will take a Johnny Wholestaff approach on the mound, but one would think Arkansas still has the advantage after WSU was forced to play an extra game and use a lot of pitchers, including James Wise, who started BOTH games yesterday, and it’s No. 1 starter, Chad Arnold, who threw 113 pitches Friday and 50+ in his four inning relief stint late last night.

Arkansas may counter with reliever Jeremy Heatley to start, and given some of the epic implosions he has had under pressure this season, that frightens the bejesus out of me.

Up-and-down freshman D.J. Baxendale will also almost certainly be prominently involved, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Brett Eibner (who didn’t play last night because of wrist and leg injuries) not only play CF, but also be called on to pitch for the first time in several weeks.

Eibner should also be drafted in the 1st or 2nd round of the MLB draft, which starts today, but he should still have UA 3b Zack Cox (who is dubbed by some as the best pure hitter in the draft) pick up the dinner tab (I hope it’s a celebratory one) as Cox is expected to be a Top 10 overall pick.

I have a bad feeling about this game. I think the UA season will come to an end, tonight. It’s too bad because Cox and Eibner may be the best tandem to ever play baseball at Arkansas.

BlogHawgs Bad Announcing Hall of Fame–WSU Baseball Play-By-Play Guy

Posted by Adam Butler on June 5, 2010

I can’t find the Washington State University Baseball Annoucer’s name to save my life, and maybe it’s for the best.

This guy is a caricature of a caricature. Click “Highlights” on the Left, and then “NCAA Baseball Regional Game 2 Hilites” on the right. Endure an annoying M&Ms commercial (15 seconds) and then enjoy.  It’s one of the most over-the-top radio voices I have heard.

NCAA Baseball, Fayetteville Regional Report — Friday

Posted by Brett Kincaid on June 4, 2010

You need not remind the Hogs about their history of regional hosting.  They are well aware.

Arkansas has had its fair share of close calls in regional play.

Reading this article certainly makes one realize just how remarkable Grambling’s run to Fayetteville has been.

Washington State is happy to be in Fayetteville, but they are already focusing on a place a few hours north.

Kansas State believes their Big XII schedule has prepared the Wildcats for the rigors the NCAA Regional.
