University of Mississippi Mascot Selection

Posted by Adam Butler on June 30, 2010

Yowza. I checked, and this is not a fake site. These are real possibilities for the new Mississippi mascot. Seriously.  It’s always good when your potential mascot is a reference to a famous SNL skit. I guess it’s a Mississippi thing. MSU has “more cowbell!”.

Nevertheless, “Gooooooooo, Land Sharks!”.

So, what will the ASU team be called now? Well, the decision making process started out with hundreds of suggestions from fans, former ASU students, athletes, current students, and just about everyone else who is an a ASU fan. The list was a lengthy one, 1500 to begin with and was narrowed down to 700, then down to 42, and down to 12, down to 6 and finally down to the final 3 by choosing the most popular suggestions and variations of the most popular ones and then narrowed down again and again. Some of the most popular names chosen to be voted on were: “The Ridge Runners,” “The Wolves,” “The Red Wolves”, and the several train associated names such as “The Express”. The Mascot Selection Committee certainly had their work cut out for them as they shuffled through all the ideas, suggestions, and images submitted to them for consideration. There was even some consideration of “THE SKEETERS”, which I, myself thought was a pretty good presentation of Arkansas in general, but did not meet with much approval. The committee would ask, from time to time via the local television station KAIT-8 for votes from the public as the list was narrowed down each time. The process was a long and painful one as most everyone agreed that after cheering for the Indians for so many years, it would not be easy to get used to any new name.

It should be noted that they will remain the Ole Miss Rebels. They’re just changing the suit that the guy puts on that roams the sidelines. They’re really just getting rid of the Colonel Reb character.
