UA Ace and Little Rock Native Drew Smyly Picked #68 Overall in the 2010 MLB Draft

Posted by Adam Butler on June 8, 2010

by the Detroit Tigers.  The mass exodus of talent from the UA baseball team is officially in full swing.  Zack Cox and Drew Smyly are draft-eligible sophomores, meaning they could come back to school twice, but it isn’t going to happen. Eibner is long gone, too. And, I don’t blame them.  They will all be the beneficiaries of hefty signing bonuses in the coming months.

UA CF/P Brett Eibner Picked 54th Overall in the 2010 MLB Draft

by the KC Royals, meaning Eibner could be playing in NWA in a year, and Cox could be a frequent visitor there, and in North Little Rock, too, as a Springfield Cardinal.

Finally, a Salient Anti-BCS/Pro Playoff System Argument

Posted by Adam Butler on June 8, 2010

by Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports. This column is a Tour De Force, although I am sure Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe and, (in some respects) Big 10 Commissioner Jim Delany, disagree.  See, if you want to win me over on the Playoff System, facts, realism and logic (and not the hyperbole that a Playoff system results in a more “true” champion) is the way to do it.

That said, this paragraph, made me pucker up a little until I realized that Bobby Petrino is the UA football Coach and the Mississippi Coach isn’t.

Conference expansion is about to forever alter college athletics: destroying traditions, hammering taxpayers and increasing competition. It will leave once-major programs out of the loop, consolidate power and extend the gap between haves and have nots – even within leagues such as the Big Ten.

And, wannabe shock jock sportswriter Paul Finebaum isn’t helping my heartburn with his usual drivel about Arkansas and USC-E being a “waste of space” for the SEC. It’s agenda-driven and historically inaccurate, and for those reasons, I hesitate to link  it.  But, I do so to point out that, particularly with regard to football–by the standard Finebaum applies to Arkansas and USC-E, Tennessee (his alma mater) should be considered a waste of space, too.

Then again, we are talking about a guy who rose to SEC sportswriter/radio guy prominence with a schtick that would make “Michael From Stuttgart” (AKA blowhard radio guy who calls into 15 sports radio shows a day and does everything he can to offend anyone with which he speaks) blush.

But, I digress.  My point is, I can be sold on the Playoff System if people start speaking Wetzel’s language and the SEC makes sure that Arkansas at least has the opportunity to be a “have” instead of a “have not”.

Sir Elton Serenades Sir GOP

Will Pimp for Charity

In one of the more bizarre turn of events this weekend, Sir Elton John sang at the fourth (4) wedding of Mr. Rush Limbaugh.  Limbaugh has on many occasions spoken in anti-gay tones and has also joked about homosexuality.  John is said to have earned $1M for the gig which he will donate to charity.

This type of olive branch is not out of the ordinary for the singer. Several years ago he performed a duet with Eminem even after the rapper had bashed John and gays in general.

I was going to post Keith Olbermann’s take on this but he ended it with one of those awful “comedian” interviews in which Keith puts up softballs for D-List comic hacks to swing away at. Last night it was Michael Musto who – if it were not for Paula Poundstone – would be the least funny person on Earth.  He was also borderline offensive.  Even Keith was trying to backtrack.  Nothing ruins a good Countdown more than Michael Musto.
