Armed Man–Named McVey–arrested at North Carolina Airport as Obama Leaves.

Posted by Adam Butler on April 26, 2010

Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio had a car equipped with police gear, and had a sidearm, and told police he wanted to see the President. He also had formulas for rifle scopes.  Methinks this dude wanted to do a lot more than see the President.

Last week marked the 15th anniversary of the deadly bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh on April 19, 1995.

At about 2 p.m., airport police saw McVey get out of a maroon car with Ohio plates and that he had a sidearm, Smith said. Both airport police and the Secret Service questioned him and he was taken into custody. The suspect was nowhere near the president’s plane, which had just departed, and was in a rental car return lot that is open to the public, Smith said.

His car was equipped with clear LED law enforcement-style strobe lights in the front and rear dash, Smith said. The car also had a mounted digital camera in the front window, four large antennas on the trunk lid, and under the steering wheel was a working siren box. Smith said McVey was not in law enforcement.

When McVey got out of the car, he was listening to a handheld scanner and radio that had a remote earpiece, Smith said. Police said he was monitoring local agencies and had formulas for rifle scopes on a note in his cup holder. Police did not immediately elaborate on what the formulas might mean and Smith was not available to comment late Sunday.

McVey gave authorities an Ohio driver’s license, but a computer check failed to show the number was valid, police said. His hometown of Coshocton is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.

When Officer Kaleb Rice asked him what he was doing, McVey told him he heard the president was in town and wanted to see him.

Rice removed the firearm and took McVey into custody. He was being held at the Buncombe County jail on $100,000 bond.

The investigation into what McVey was doing with a gun, with formulas for rifle scopes and why his car was equipped with police gear was continuing, Smith said. The Secret Service had no comment on the arrest, deferring to airport police.

Poison Frontman Michaels Still in Hospital

Posted by Jeff on April 26, 2010

I went back to look and apparently I failed to mention in my “About Us” bio that I was a hair band junkie back in the 80’s.  I rocked the permed mullet and everything.  And like most of us, Poison was a signature favorite of mine.  My Look What The Cat Dragged In cassette – yes cassette – got worn out in my car cruising the strip in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.  Fluff, glam rock? Yes.  Did I love them?  Yes.

Michaels without the cowboy hat and do-rag. A rare find.

Needless to say this is sad and I truly hope that Michaels recovers. You can’t say the guy doesn’t work hard.  He combines still touring with Poison (I saw them recently in Tulsa with Cheap Trick [love] and Def Leppard [hate]) with his VH1 reality show [hate] and now the Celebrity Apprentice [no interest].  I don’t watch Apprentice but I checked out the first half last night just to see if they would at least acknowledge his hospitalization. Nada.

This Blog Hawg wishes him a speedy and complete recovery.

Security Amped Up at Comedy Central

Posted by Adam Butler on April 23, 2010

in response to recent threats by Islamic extremists against the creators of “South Park”.

Naturally, the Islamic Radical who made the threats is reportedly an American.

So, the moral is, American Radical Islamics hate Americans because of our freedom.

ESPN’s Chris Low is High on the Hogs.

Posted by Adam Butler on April 23, 2010

And, it scares me, because as a Hog fan, I know we always blow it (except ’94).

Here are his articles regarding heightened expectations, Ryan Mallett, the defense, and videos with (injury) rehabbing Isaac Madison and Mallett

Are we STILL FOUR MONTHS from kickoff?

Broncos Nation Mourns Drafting of Tim Tebow

Posted by Adam Butler on April 23, 2010

courtesy of friend of BlogHawgs, and longtime Northwest Arkansas morning radio show host, Jon Williams:

And, um, this column probably doesn’t help their collective frame of mind, either.

It was still difficult to believe even as the crowd at Radio City laughed and made fun of the Broncos after Tebow’s name was called.

The league is laughing at Denver right now. Other teams are guffawing and mocking them and making Broncos jokes. The countdown until Josh McDaniels gets his ass canned has officially started. Denver wasted a valuable first-round pick on a player who will do nothing for years unless they move Tebow to fullback or make him a missionary and have him snip foreskins.

Somewhere, John Elway weeps.

Northwest Corridor Report

Posted by Jeff on April 23, 2010

I’ve been wanting  to do this since I started helping AB out here at Blog Hawgs but I have been pretty busy. Well today I had a few extra moments so I thought I would throw together what I’ll call the Northwest Corridor Report.  I guess my goal is to keep you Central Arkansans in touch with what is news up here so that  if  when you move back up here, you won’t wonder, “When did that happen?”

All of this is from the past few days. I’ll try to keep a running list of items for the week and post it all on Fridays.  Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to add.

Enjoy.

P.S. The NWAONLINE links might require you to sign in. If you take the ADG, it’s pretty easy to sign in and get it at no extra charge.  If you don’t then you’d have to get an account. (Sorry!)

Northwest Corridor Report

Benton County Judge and former state legislator, Dave Bisbee will not resign in face of misdemeanor charges related to how he awarded county projects (including one to a company that he owns. In fact, he’s still running for re-election.

The Downtown and Dickson Street parking regulations have gone through some changes.  Free parking in Fayetteville is nearing an end of the road. But Fayetteville is still trying to make it easier for Dickson Street residents.

Andy Lee just can’t keep himself from the newspapers…

If you haven’t been to Fayetteville in a while, getting beer is quite a bit easier since even Walmart carries it now. But in Springdale, even after Macadoodles won their case against the Liquor Association, EZ Mart is having trouble.

It has been four years since Nina Ingram was found murdered at her Law Quad apartment in Fayetteville. Police are still working to find her killer.

Shamed Olympic Champ Uses the ‘Ole Viagra Defense

Posted by Adam Butler on April 22, 2010

Olympic 400-meter champ LaShawn Merritt has tested positive for steroids, and says it was due to a “male enhancement drug”.

From the article:

Jacobs declined to name the specific over-the-counter product Merritt had consumed but said it was well-known. Jacobs said it contained DHEA, which is often used to treat erectile dysfunction, and another steroid called pregnenolone.

He isn’t helping himself with quotes like this:

To know that I’ve tested positive as a result of product that I used for personal reasons is extremely difficult to wrap my hands around…”

NCAA Tourney to Expand to 68 Teams, Add TV Coverage

Posted by Adam Butler on April 22, 2010

The NCAA is on the verge of a 14-year deal with CBS and Turner Broadcasting to air the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  I think this is good news for everyone involved.

They aren’t expanding to a ridiculious 96-team format, and every game will be aired live, somewhere, including CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV (and something called the internets).

I guess Turner Broadcasting (first Conan and now March Madness) has decided it wants to be a major player. I welcome the new (old) blood.

Comedy Central Censors South Park. The Terrorists Have Won.

Posted by Adam Butler on April 22, 2010

South Park Creator Matt Stone After Hearing He Has Been Censored, but Carlos Mencia Hasn't. OK, I made That Up.

This  move that can’t sit well with the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

The Terrorists clearly hate us for our freedom…….and sacrilegious cartoons depicting religious figures in bear costumes.  I can foresee a Dave Chappellesque South Park departure from Comedy Central which would, in combo with Dave’s hasty departure a few years ago, be a death knell for Comedy Central (although I do dig their Roasts).

I am afraid to write more, because I don’t want to be warned like Parker and Stone recently were.

UPDATED: Here is the response from Parker & Stone to Comedy Central’s decision. They must have an unbelievably sweet deal with Comedy Central, because you would expect a lot more by way of a statement from guys with the nerve to do some of the controversial things they have done on South Park.

BREAKING NEWS: Courtney Fortson Hires Agent

Posted by Adam Butler on April 21, 2010

"What the Hell are We Doing?"

and thus, his Razorback basketball career comes to an end.  Theoretically, if he hadn’t hired an agent, he could have returned to the University of Arkansas next season. After he declared for the draft a few days ago, though, (given his suspension-filled time in Fayetteville) this comes as no suprise.

The real suprise? Fellow (former) Hog Stef Welsh has hired the same agent. That can’t be a good sign for Fortson.

On Being a Parent With a Disability

Posted by Adam Butler on April 21, 2010

CNN.com has an interesting feature article on something I know a little bit about (ie having a disability and being a parent……not “being surly” which I know a little bit about, too). I have Cerebral Palsy (as most of my readers know) and my wife and I have a 2-year old son, Will B.

Ironically, one of the families mentioned has a dad with Cerebral Palsy whose son is named Adam.

From the article:

Adam Macke, 12, of Decatur, Illinois, also knows what it’s like to have a parent with cerebral palsy. His father, Todd, doesn’t need a wheelchair, but his condition affects his walking and speech. Adam said some people laugh at his dad because he is different. Adam, though, looks up to his father.

“Even though people make fun of him, and he’s different, he’s still confident in himself,” Adam said.

I dread the day the jokes come, but feel sure that Amber and I will prepare Will B. to deal with them (Much better than I did as a “tween”. Let’s just say it involved wooden crutches with wingnuts, stitches, and lots of trips to the principal’s office)

Here’s his Dad’s report.  He pretty much makes me feel like a loser–especially the part about being in a Matt Damon movie.  They better cast me in the inevitable Ben Affleck biopic, since he is my doppelganger.

“Ben” Gets 6 Game Suspension &

Posted by Adam Butler on April 21, 2010

Behavioral Analysis.  This seems fair to me.

That said, am I a cynic for thinking that if his name were BenJarvis Green-Ellis, it would be six-teen?

For those not paying attention, that last sentence contained the rare passive-aggressive race card reference and veiled Hyphenator joke combo. I’ll be here all week.

UPDATE:  This list (and the punishments) suggest that my cynicism is unfounded.

Keli McGregor Remembered

Posted by Adam Butler on April 21, 2010

this is a very nice column and it had some interesting info about McGregor’s time at Arkansas.

It deposited him in Arkansas, where he was the assistant athletic director and hand-chosen replacement to Frank Broyles. McGregor was such a part of the scene that when Arkansas won the NCAA basketball championship in 1994, coach Nolan Richardson, in the midst of the locker room celebration, took time to call McGregor, and had each player get on the phone to thank him for what he did to help the program.

Hogs Baseball Getting Lots of National Respect

Posted by Adam Butler on April 20, 2010

Chicks Dig the Long Ball.....and UA CF/SP Brett Eibner.

The Razorbacks are in every National Top 10 (and 2nd in RPI) and are are being lauded by folks at ESPN and Baseball America (scroll down to the “Third Strike”).

UA 3b Zack Cox is the headliner, and should be drafted in the top half of the 1st round of the upcoming 2010 MLB draft.  That spot will bring with it a $1.5-$2 million signing bonus which is decent, I guess.

But, as ESPN’s Kyle Peterson notes, the UA baseball team is far from a one-man gang.

To the game…and the atmosphere. My first trip to the Natural State did not disappoint. Dave Van Horn has created a monster in Fayetteville. Most college fans know of Baum stadium, but the growth since Van Horn took over is pretty impressive. They now have 32 luxury suites (all sold out) that extend down each baseline and the feeling is still collegiate. He also has a pretty salty squad this year. Zack Cox is the headliner and rightfully so. Show me a more complete hitter in college baseball right now. What impressed me even more though were the guys that surrounded him. I saw many of them in Omaha last year, but the lineup right now is very offensive. Bo Bigham was the sparkplug as he reached base five times. He is a perfect guy to hit in front of Cox, Wilkins and Eibner. He showed patience and really seemed to get his role…all with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Wilkins has big time power and his 3 run HR in the first really spun the game early. Oh, Drew Smyly was pretty good himself. The lefthander gave up two in the first and then cruised through the last eight innings for his first career complete game. His variance with the fastball probably impressed me the most. The velocity on the fastball was between 84-93 mph, a range that I don’t know that I have ever seen. The top end velo was better than I remembered and he proved why he is a true Friday night guy. Arkansas is for real, I would be very surprised if they are not hosting throughout and fighting for another trip to Omaha.

South Park Takes on Islam Again

Posted by Jeff on April 19, 2010

What do these guys have in common with Salman Rushdie?

***UPDATE***

Revolutionmuslim.com now says their post was a call for protest not for violence.  By the way, one of the founders of this group last year said the 9/11 attacks were justified.  I tried to go to their site myself to see what it said but could not get it to pull up.

***

South Park is celebrating its 200th episode by again pushing the limits of the Islam ban on showing images of the prophet Mohammed. In the episode the prophet is shown at the end in a bear costume. Apparently the website Revolutionmuslim.com is insinuating that Trey Parker and Matt Stone may need to watch their backs.

While looking at this I also came across the video below from an organization called Boing Boing. In the interview, Stone mentions that they have drawn Mohammed before in Seaon 5.

I have not watched this show regularly since season two or three. But I will say this. They seem to be equal opportunity in their attacks on celebrities, politicians, and religion. If I recall correctly, it was their skewering of Scientology that pushed Isaac Hayes (voice of Chef) off the payroll before he passed away.

Big Ten Expansion Ramping Up?

Posted by Jeff on April 19, 2010

Dennis Dodd is reporting on CBS Sports that the possible expansion of the Big 10 might include 3 to 5 more teams. Everyone knows that Notre Dame would be the best addition for football purposes. We also know that unless NBC dumps the Irish’s TV contract, that is unlikely to happen.

I'll take two, please. UConn & Syracuse would be nice.

The intriguing thing to me in this is the suggestion that the expansion would like to tap into the New York media market. Connecticut, Rutgers, and Syracuse are all mentioned as possible future Big Ten teams.  Besides improving the Big 10′s exposure in the country’s largest TV market, this would also dramatically improve the league’s basketball status.  With the exception of Michigan State, the Big 10 hasn’t produced much of anything on the hardcourt since Michigan in the late 80′s and Bobby Knight’s Indiana.
