How many of you thought that the new guy would do a full-fledged sports-related post about Cornell University?
Yes, you all know that it is an Ivy League school. But, how many of you know where Cornell is? (Answer below…)
I’m certain that everyone knows that the Big Red joined the Sweet 16 by defeating Wisconsin 87-69. But did you also know that this is the first Ivy league school to make the Sweet 16 in 31 years? (Penn was the last.) Did you also know that 13 players and managers all live together in an off-campus house called the “Dog Pound?” Big Red trivia. Feel it, live it.
So why is this the greatest weekend in Cornell sports history? The Big Red also scored runner-up to the University of Iowa in the NCAA D-I Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska. If you follow wrestling at all, you know that second to the Hawkeyes is as good as winning it all. In fact the Hawks had their third NCAA title in a row wrapped up before the wretle-backs (consolation rounds) started. Iowa and Cornell faced off twice in the final round. Cornell’s Kyle Dake won the first one with a 7-3 decision over Iowa’s Montell Marion at 141. Later, at 174, Iowa’s Jay Borschell, the #2 seed in the tourney defeated Cornell’s #1 seeded Mack Lewnes 6-2. At the risk of further boring the non-wrestling-fans I need to point out that Lewnes had not been taken down once all season prior to Borschell doing so… twice. This is an incredible statistic. Takedowns are very common in wrestling and to go 30+ matches without being taken down once is incredible.
Anyway, congrats to the Big Red fans out there. Big weekend.
Answer: Ruth Bader Ginsberg, C. Everett Koop, Keith Olbermann, and Jimmy Smits would all direct you to Cornell’s main campus in Ithaca, New York.
