Top 20 Most Valuable College Basketball programs.
I haven’t researched it, but I bet there isn’t another team in America (OK maybe Hoops Hysterical Indiana) that has gone 14-16 (2-14) and 14-18 (7-9) and drawn 10,000 a game on average in this economy, much less pushed 15,000. That’s without even factoring in that the UA has won THREE NCAAT games in the last 14 seasons.
I am certainly not calling for any kind of statement from the fans, but I can see why UA Athletic Director Jeff Long really hasn’t done much to shake things up. He doesn’t have to do so.
Relative to its performance and the support received by the rest of the league and the country (Arkansas has led the SECW in attendance the last 16 seasons and has been a fixture near the top of the entire league), the Razorback fan base has……(wait for it)–”overachieved”.
Those numbers don’t reflect rear ends in seats (it’s tix sold….but so are everyone else’s #s) and they are a year behind. That said, Arkansas was in the Top 10 in attendance nationally from 1994-2001.
Then (nationally):
2002: 13
2003: 14
2004: 13
2005: 9
2006: 12
2007: 9
2008: 8
2009: 11
While a 3,000 seat dropoff the past season (13,282) is significant, I don’t think it is nearly as bad as what you would see at most major programs following a 2-14 conference season last year and a spate off subsequent off-court problems and dismissals/suspensions.
And, my guess is that in this economy, 13,282 this year will be between 15-20, nationally.
I think that track record is pretty salty, especially when you compare it with the on-court records during that time.
Without a doubt, the UA fan base has definitely done it’s part. It just needs something to believe in.
