Oscars Redux–Sandra Turns A Historical DP and Bigelow Puts the Hurt on Big Blue

Posted by Jeff on March 8, 2010

Sandra blindsided us with her Razzie/Oscars double play

So last night, after the George Thorogood concert, I flipped on the Oscars expecting to see James Cameron looking for an extra arm to hold another Oscar.

Pardon my disdain but I really believe that James Cameron is trying to suck the life out of me three hours at a time. In 1997 I was yelling at the screen, “When is this boat going to SINK?!”  This time it was, “Why doesn’t he just use the names John Dunbar, Stands with a Fist and Wind in his Hair?  It’d save us the trouble of trying to remember Jake Sully, Neytiri, and Tsu’tey.”

I got to see Jeff Bridges accept for Crazy Heart (same speech as he gave at the Golden Globes.)  Then Sandra Bullock won.  Really?   Did they miss Speed 2: Cruise Control?    Wait.  I have to give her credit.  Anyone who has the onions to attend and accept a Raspberry Award the night before should not be scorned.  This is an accomplishment that I doubt will ever be matched.  Razzie for Worst Actress one night then Oscar for Best Actress the next night.  That’s huge.

Anyway, back to Hurt Locker.  We missed the prior awards but I have since learned that Dances With Smurfs (I wish I could take credit for that name but I can’t…) won what it should have won, Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, etc.  But that Hurt Locker had pretty much swept the rest.  Kathryn Bigelow (aka Cameron’s ex-wife) has to feel pretty good. She beat up on her $500 million dollar (cost) per movie Ex AND became the first woman to ever win for Best Director.  Good stuff.    I dragged my wife to see this in the theater and she still thanks me.  Hurt Locker grabs you by the throat and never lets go until the credits roll.  Watch it.  It’s good.   When you do, tell me if you agree with me that the grocery store scene is one of the best visualizations of human emotion ever put on screen. How can a man who is home with his family after what he has been through be so unhappy?

Good stuff, Jeff. My alternator went out this afternoon, or I would have already posted Jeff’s bio and and intro. Look for those tomorrow. The readers of this blog who know Jeff know what he is gonna be a great addition. Those who don’t know him will soon find out. I am happily adding the “S” back on “Bloghawgs” tomorrow.
