Scott Brown For Presidency in 2012?

Posted by Adam Butler on January 20, 2010

Maybe, but surely not.  I mean, he has understandably become a GOP rock star after upsetting Martha Coakley to win the Massachusetts Senate seat that was long held by Ted Kennedy.

But, if we learned anything about presidential politics from the 2008 election and the GOP perspective,  it’s that a 1 term Senator lacks the experience to be President and can’t get by on charisma and good looks. Even considering Brown as a candidate would smack of hypocrisy, right?

Instead, Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee should (please, please, please) get GOP nod.

Vote of Confidence for UA Hoops Coach John Pelphrey?

Posted by Adam Butler on January 19, 2010

Or, was it a “hanging chad”? It depends on University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long’s definition of “reasonable” time, I suppose.

I have said it many times before, and I’ll say it again–Long isn’t going to tip his hand regarding Pelphrey’s job security–he would be crazy to do so.

Long, the man who would sell the naming rights to the oxygen inside Reynolds Razorback Stadium if he could (cue the ever-present, eardrum-shattering Pig Screen Behemoth Commercial Machine and Occasion Replay Provider, which brings us classic audio like ”Does your throat feel like ASSphalt?). He did tip his hand regarding ticket prices, though. They’re  likely (READ: Definitely)going up.

You see, Long doesn’t see things in black and white. He sees them in terms of Green or not Green…..as in, something is a potential revenue stream, or it isn’t. And, the current company line is that Bud Walton isn’t good enough to attract quality recruits.  To do so, Long thinks they need a new state-of-the-art practice facility, and a new football lockerroom while we’re at it, poor economy be damned.

So, if you think anything has been determined regarding Pelphrey that can’t be changed in the blink of another 2-14 SEC performance and a noticeably  unoccupied seat or 12,000 in Bud Walton Arena at season’s end, then you’ll believe anything you see on the Commercial Machine.

Frank Broyles a Texas Longhorn Fan?

Posted by Adam Butler on January 19, 2010

We know better, but Blake Rutherford, the prolific and plugged in blogger at Blake’s Think Tank, astutely writes about a similar sports and politics faux pas in Massachusetts that certainly hasn’t helped Martha Coakley as she is seemingly doing everything she can to forever live in Democratic political infamy.

That was a pretty good sports take for a guy who went to Middlebury College. That said, I have heard rumblings about the legitimacy of Blake’s  movie takes from BlogHawgs.com Special Contributor Jim Gooch, who has his own opinions about the decade that was on the Silver Screen.

Jack-Booted San Diego Cops Arrest Jets Fan

Posted by Adam Butler on January 18, 2010

for cheering.  Look at all the Chargers fans around the Jets fan begging the cops not to take him, and coming to his defense. One guy in the S.D. throwback clearly gives the Jets fan’s girlfriend his number so that he can be a witness.

Unless he did something else, the cops were way out of line.  They should have arrested San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding or Head Coach Norv Turner.

Fast enough to clock a 21:25 200m (the 9th fastest in the storied program’s history) in his collegiate track debut, helping the Razorbacks top Texas in a dual meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Saturday.

Behind the Scenes of Bobby Petrino’s Move to Arkansas

Posted by Adam Butler on January 17, 2010

from the Atlanta Falcons. This is must-hear audio for Hog fans.  It’s definitely worth the 25 minutes.  The best part, I think, is that it debunks a few myths about Petrino.

Media Drama Prior To Lane Kiffin Press Conference.

I don’t know why, but I was enthralled by this.

That really calm dude sitting in the chair and texting is ESPN SEC blogger, and former Vols beat writer, Cris Low (I frequently link to his articles).  No wonder he is so solid. Calm. Good listeners.  Some of the others? Not so much.

It’s Howdy Dooley Time

Posted by Brett Kincaid on January 15, 2010

After a crazy week on Rocky Top, Tennessee is set to announce its new head coach.  Derek Dooley, son of famed Georgia coach Vince Dooley, is leaving Louisiana Tech for Tennessee.  Reports indicate he will take as many as 3 staffers from Ruston with him.  Interim Volunteer coach Kippy Brown will most certainly stay on the staff, possibly as the team’s running backs coach.

Dooley brings a defensive background to Tennessee.  He was able to find moderate success in Ruston, although the Bulldogs did not quite live up to expectations this past season.  His signature win with the program is likely the road victory over Mississippi State in 2008.

UPDATE:  Reports now suggest the deal is not done.  Houston’s Kevin Sumlin, who reportedly signed a 3-year contract extension last night, may still be in the mix.

Arkansas Offensive Line Coach Search–UPDATED

Posted by Adam Butler on January 14, 2010

Football Scoop is reporting it’s Nevada Offensive Coordinator Chris Klenakis, and it’s a done deal.

Arkansas: We have been told that it’s a done deal with Chris Klenakis (Nevada OC / offensive line coach) going to Arkansas.

Chris Klenakis Bio

earlier from Football Scoop (pretty good site).

Arkansas: Our sources tell us Petrino has narrowed the offensive line job to Chris Klenakis (Nevada OC / OL), Steve Shankweiler (East Carolina), a coach that recently accepted position at another school, and one other coach that we were not able to confirm.

Did we enter into some kind of exclusive agreement with the Nevada Coaches Named Chris or KrisDifficult to Pronounce Surnames Association?  If we hire Klenakis to go with the recently hired (former UNLV assistant) Kris Cinkovich I will really have to wonder.

Also of note on the link, Skip Holtz if leaving ECU to take the South Florida job.  I guess ECU isn’t quite as big time as it’s suprisingly obnoxious fans thought.

Texas Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp Has

Posted by Adam Butler on January 14, 2010

reportedly rejected a big offer to become the next head coach at Tennessee.  And, the Vols’ have apparently turned to Duke Head Coach David Cutcliffe (former Mississippi head coach and longtime Tennessee offensive cordinator under Phil Fulmer during the Peyton Manning years)

A couple of things: Cutcliffe is a very solid choice.  He has done solid jobs with college football also-rans Mississippi and Duke. More importantly, though, he is part of the Tennessee family, and VolNation just get crammed on by a mouthy, punk that walks around with an undeserved sense of entitlement.  I expect they’ll settle on Cutcliffe, and he’ll accept, quickly.

One has to wonder what Muschamp is waiting on, here.  Is he overplaying his hand?  There aren’t a ton of better jobs that are going to be available to a guy who, for all he has accomplished, has still never been a head coach.  And don’t fool yourself about the Texas “Coach in Waiting” thing.  Mack isn’t going anywhere for awhile, as long his heart doesn’t go Urban on him.

Lane Kiffin’s Ears Must be Burning

Posted by Adam Butler on January 13, 2010

Mr. Alleged Cell Phone Penis Photo Guy

Because lots of ESPN.com people are letting him have it.  Kudos to them for, unlike their ESP*I*N TV brethren, being consistent regarding Kiffin.  They ripped Bobby Petrino when he left Atlanta under similar circumstances, and as, seen below, are just KILLING Kiffin.

The TV guys have given him a pass.  To be fair, most of the guys who ripped Petrino on TV have since been ALLEEGEDLY  fired or suspended for sending cell phone pics of their penises to co-workers (and didn’t learn from it) or making derogatory Taco jokes about Hispanic race care drivers.

Something tells me that if Salisbury could keep a job in between alleged  highly inappropriate interactions with female coworkers, the USC grad would have a much different take on Kiffin than he did Petrino. He looked straight into the camera when Petrino was hired at Arkansas and told recruits not to sign here. It was ridiculious.

Here is a summary of the ESP*I*N columns on Kiffin: (and one to grow on from the L.A. Times)

Forde–”Paris Hilton has paid more dues than Kiffin.”

Wojciechowski–”If there were a stock car race between all the frauds, egomaniacs and two-faced weasels I’ve ever covered, Lane Kiffin would have the pole position all to himself.”

Schlabach: Vols Better Off without Kiffin

Hill: Doesn’t blame Kiffin, but writes: I don’t have a bunch of hateful adjectives for Kiffin. Instead, I’d like to thank him, because with this bold — albeit shady — move, Kiffin has confirmed what a cesspool big-time college sports have become.  It ain’t nothin’ but a hustle, folks.

L.A. Times–Bill Plaschke–Kiffin a lightweight for a heavyweight program.

For what it’s worth, I tend to agree most with Hill, who doesn’t blame Kiffin.  She blames the cesspool of an industry and says that while he’s slimy, the whole industry is a corrupt business. I agree, but think Kiffin deserves his fair share of ripping considering his brashness at Tennessee and the brevity of his stay.

Arkansas’ Special Teams Just Got A Lot Better

Posted by Adam Butler on January 13, 2010

Punter/Kicker William Russ of Shrevport Evangel, one of the best in America at his position, has committed to play for the Razorbacks.  I think it’s safe to say he will start as the punter and handle kickoff duties from Day 1, injecting a little (big) thing called the touchback into the Arkansas arsenal, along with a punting hangtime that lasts longer than a sneeze.  Below is a video of Russ:
