Fortson Back

Hot off the presses:

Fortson to Return

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore point guard Courtney Fortson will return to game competition for the Arkansas men’s basketball team Razorback head coach John Pelphrey announced on Tuesday.

“We are pleased that Courtney has done the things necessary for him to incorporate basketball fully back into his life,” Pelphrey said. “In the past few months, Courtney has worked hard to address personal issues and meet objectives to facilitate his return to active competition. Our primary focus with Courtney, and all of our student-athletes, is to assist them in realizing their full potential as individuals. This includes developing them athletically, academically and socially. We will continue to provide all of our student-athletes the support and appropriate resources to assist them in that process. All of our student-athletes will continue to be expected to represent the University of Arkansas with integrity. As with all Razorback student-athletes, Courtney must continue to meet the expectations of our athletic department to remain a member of the Razorback program.”

Fortson will be returning to competition after missing Arkansas’ first 14 games of the 2009-10 season. The Montgomery, Ala., native is one of five returning starters from the 2008-09 basketball team and as a true freshman he was second on the Arkansas roster with 14.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Fortson was also responsible for a team best 172 assists and 33 steals over 29 games. Fortson’s 178 assists a year ago were the most by a Razorback since the 1996-97 season.

Former Tennessee Assistant Coach Steve Caldwell

Posted by Adam Butler on January 5, 2010

to become the Hogs’ new defensive line coach?

If so, that would be a good, solid, suprising hire.

Caldwell (bio here) is an ASWhoo alum and has previously expressed disdain for the Hogs (although he has attended practice within the last few years).  He is a longtime Fat Phil Fullmer assistant and is considered to be a pretty good recruiter.

He’s exactly what the Hogs need in that spot.  If Caldwell is one of the hires, I am pleasantly suprised.  I thought from his previous comments that he wouldn’t be a candidate.

Deal, or No Deal, Mssrs. Holliday and Boras?

Posted by Adam Butler on January 5, 2010

That’s what Tony La Russa and the St. Louis brass are saying.  They want something done this week.  I applaud the move.  They made an (overly?) generous offer, there appear to be no other serious suitors out there, and any stretching out of the process at this point would seem to be evil agent Scott Boras posturing for more $$ and more years.

TT at TT

Posted by Brett Kincaid on January 5, 2010

Tommy Tuberville is currently on the campus of Texas Tech University.  That according to ESPN’s Joe Schad.  Tuberville has expressed his ineterest in the job publicly since Mike Leach was fired last week.  Tubbs has a great resume which included a stop at Texas A&M back when The Wrecking Crew was still a force.

With his defensive reputation, this would fit the pattern that most schools follow — going opposite philosophy of what they just fired.  Although, it would be odd to see Texas Tech lining up in the I-formation.
