Florida DE Carlos Dunlap Suspended

Posted by Adam Butler on December 1, 2009

for the ENTIRE SEC Championship game, and, beyond that, indefinitely.  I stand corrected.  Urb did the right thing.  He must have had a talk with College Football Baby Jesus, Tim Tebow, who undoubtedly told him to do the right thing.

Posted by Adam Butler on December 1, 2009

along with (among others) a guy from Florida and one from Texas.  The award, given to the best QB in the nation, is the only such accolade that takes into account bowl performance.  Here’s the list.

Arkansas Accepts Liberty Bowl Bid

Posted by Adam Butler on December 1, 2009

per CBS affiliate KFSM.  The Razorbacks will play a Conference USA opponent–probably the high-powered Houston Cougars–if Houston beats East Carolina in this weeend’s CUSA Championship game.  I expect to see a lot of Hog fans in Mempho, and plenty of points on the board.  I wouldn’t expect a walk through for the Hogs, though.  The Coogs have a record-setting QB in their own right, have been ranked for most of the year, and have done something the Hogs haven’t–gone on the road into hostile territory, versus a favored opponent–and won.

It’s Official

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 1, 2009

The Bobby Bowden Era is over.  The legendary coach will lead the Seminoles for the final time in his team’s bowl game.  According to the ESPN story, school and bowl officials are trying to work a deal to keep the Noles in Florida for that game in either the Gator Bowl or Champs Sports Bowl.  If all goes well, the opponent will be West Virginia — the only other institution where Bowden served as head coach.

Like many of you, I grew up watching Bowden and his teams at FSU.  While never a Seminole fan, I always enjoyed watching his teams play.  They were fast, strong defensively, and innovative offensively.  Charlie Ward was Tim Tebow before it was cool.  As with any succesful team, the critics of Bowden were fierce.  He was called a choker, unable to win the big game.  But he ultimately did, winning 2 National Championships.  Although I suspect he will be remembered as much for his stinging losses to Miami as anything else.

The Florida State run from 1987 thru 2000 will eventually be viewed like Dimagio’s hit streak — a staggering accomplishment that will never be matched.  Fourteen consecutive seasons in the final AP Top 5 is hard to imagine.  Given all of USC’s success over this decade, they aren’t even close to matching what Papa Bowden did in Tallahassee.

It’s a sad day for college football.  While this is probably the best thing for the FSU program it is a blow to the game itself.  Bowden’s brand of good ol’ boyisms and country smarts kept many of us connected to college football’s glorious past.  In today’s world of corporate football and CEO coaches, Bowden was refreshing — if a bit old fashioned.  And we’ll never see one like him ever again.

Mississippi to the Cotton Bowl

Posted by Adam Butler on December 1, 2009

aka the Mississippi Coach’s apex.  No suprise here following the Hogs’ loss at LSU.  It looks like the Hogs will probably be Walkin’ in Memphis (Liberty Bowl).

Select 17 — Week 14

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 1, 2009

First, I apologize for the delay.  Things have been a little busy at the Kincaid Mansion lately, and I’m just now catching up.

Alabama and Florida go into this weekend’s matchup as the #1 and #2 teams in our poll — along with just about everyone else’s.  I wish the Big XII could deputize TCU for the weekend and have them replace Nebraska in their title game.  I do not think their is a clear argument as to why TCU should be shut out of the championship game.  Cincinnati has a pretty strong argument, too, assuming they TCOB against Pittsburgh.  Regardless, this will be a very fun weekend of college football — unless you’re a Boise St. fan.  They are not guaranteed a BCS game and will certainly be knocked out of contention with a Nebraska upset of Texas.

Rank Team Points
1 Alabama (4) 114
2 Florida (2) 112
3 Texas (1) 110
4 TCU 95
5 Cincinnati 92
6 Boise St. 85
7 Ohio St. 74
7 Oregon 74
9 Iowa 60
10 Penn St. 54
11 Virginia Tech 40
11 Oregon St. 40
13 Georgia Tech 27
14 BYU 26
15 LSU 20
16 Pittsburgh 18
17 Houston 13

Others receiving votes:  Miami 11, California 3, Stanford 2, USC 1

Florida Defensive Stalwart Carlos Dunlap Arrested

Posted by Adam Butler on December 1, 2009

and charged with driving under the influence in Gainesville early this morning.  Police say they found him passed out at a green light.  In other, related news, sources close to the program say Florida Coach Urban Meyer will suspend Dunlap for halftime of the much-anticipated SEC Championship game showdown between the undefeated Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

To be clear, Meyer has suspended Meyer for the actual 20-minute halftime period between halves–not the first or second half of play.  OK, I made that part up.  But, does anyone think Urb will bring the hammer when he suspended Brandon Spikes for a half AGAINST VANDY earlier this season after he was caught trying to gouge an opponent’s eye out?
