Top Ten Movies of the Decade

Posted by Adam Butler on December 31, 2009

Special to Bloghawgs.com by Jim Gooch……Happy New Year…..this BlogHawg (AB) will be out of pocket for awhile in Tunimemphisca.
10.  Mystic River: As a director, Clint Eastwood dominated this decade with great films like the oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby and recenlty with Gran Torino, but Eastwood’s Mystic River will be a highly rewatchable and captivating film for years to come, if only for the performances Eastwood got out of Sean Penn and Tim Robbins.  2003′s Mystic River also makes the list for achieving that ever elusive status of being better than the book it’s based on, Denis Lehane’s 2001 novel of the same name.

9.  Borat: Quite unlike anything before it, Sascha Baren Cohen’s Borat, as directed by Larry Charles, reinvented satire for a whole generation.  It exposed more truths about America than most of us would like to confront.  But if that weren’t enough, it is arguably be the most laugh-out-loud hilarious movie of the last two decades.

8.  Little Children: Beautifully written and expertly acted, director Todd Field’s powerful tale of suburan angst and sexual deviancy was my favorite film of 2007, a film small in scope but grand in meaning.  If this list were a bit longer it would also include Todd Field’s tragedy, In the Bedroom.  Fields is an amazing filmmaker and is currently in talks to direct Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian.  Keep your fingers crossed and pray this happens.

7.  City of God: A gorgeous and absolutely brutal film, this 2002 Brazilian crime epic chronicling gang violence in the slums of Rio in the 70s and 80s introduced the world to Li’l Ze, reminicient of the most depraved of James Cagney villains and one of modern cinema’s most terrifying figures.  This is also the only foreign film to make this list, although Pan’s Labyrinth was in serious contention.

6.  The Bourne Movies: Seriously, how could this not make the list!  Perhaps the best action movies ever made.  Matt Damon’s Bourne significantly raised the bar on what it means to be a badass.  No James Bond has ever even come close.

5.  The Hurt Locker:  Probably the best war movie I’ve seen since Platoon, Kathryn Bigelow’s 2009 character study of American bomb technicians in mid-decade Iraq is the by far the best cinematic rendering of the consequences of one of this decade’s most ghastly blunders.

4.  The Royal Tenenbaums

3.  The Departed: Martin Scorsese’s first best picture winner (shockingly enough), this might be the most rewatchable film on the list; it’s rewatchable the same way Goodfellas is.  It’s also perfectly casted, and expertly scored with some killer rock’n'roll tunes.  This was Scorsese’s second attempt at making Leonardo DiCaprio a tough guy, and the Irish gangster gem more than makes up for the disappointing Gangs of New York.

2.  Sideways: “I am NOT drinking any f***ing merlot!”  No one does dark comedy like Alexander Payne, and he’s never done it better than in 2004′s Sideways.  This movie single-handedly made Pinot Noir and Paul Giamatti household names.  This movie was so well-written that the mechanic from Wings got nominated for an Oscar.

1.  No Country for Old Men: What’s amazing about the Coen brothers is that they’ve already made one movie, Fargo, that is widely considered one of the 100 or so greatest American movies of all time (see AFI’s list), and that they’ve made other films, Raising Arizona and the Big Lebowski, that are widely considered to be among the funniest American films of all time, the latter having firmly established itself as my generation’s most popular and least cultish cult classic (see the annual Lebowskifest).  Yet, it wasn’t until 2007′s No Country for Old Men that the extraordinarily gifted brothers Coen peaked, and in doing so they made what I would call a nearly perfect film.  Also, Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh is hands down the decade’s scariest, most villainous bad guy (not even close, Heath Ledger).

On Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals

Posted by Adam Butler on December 30, 2009

The two seem to be nearing another love connection, as the free agent outfielder has reportedly set his price, the Cardinals have made a  similar offer, and the chief remaining suitor for Holliday (unless the Yankees and Red Sox’ public denials are lies…..which is very possible), the Mets, just signed Jason Bay for a hefty sum.

If Holliday is worth 8 years and $140 million dollars not playing all his home games in Coors Field, then what will Albert Pujols be worth when his contract is set to expire in a few years…….10 years $250 million? Yikes.  If so, and Holliday and Pujols both sign with the Cardinals, that would tie up $42.5 million per year to two players for six years at a total of almost $255 million over those 6 years. Good grief.

Mike Leach Was Right Yesterday When He Said

Posted by Adam Butler on December 30, 2009

Texas Tech intended to fire him, and that was why they suspended him prior to the team’s bowl game.

They canned Leach today in the aftermath of recent accusation of player abuse.  The player in question is Adam James, the son of former SMU “Pony Expre$$” member and alleged stage Dad, Craig James.

I laughed out loud yesterday when I heard on the radio Craig James’ nickname amongst many of the Red Raiders–”Helicopter Pad”–because he hovers around the program and attends the majority of the practices.

The real unfortunate part of all of this is that we will not get to hear what Leach really thinks, and he won’t be having any more sound-bite filled pressers, at least not for awhile.

It Could Always Be Worse…

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 30, 2009

I hope my wife reads this.  The first mistake is letting your 11-year-old daughter have a boyfriend.  I was once a 15-year-old boy, and let me tell ya…impure thoughts.  That’s all I had.

Pete Carroll is a Hypocrite’s Hypocrite V

Posted by Adam Butler on December 29, 2009

It may be the only NCAA investigation to last longer thanthe largely fruitless, Whitewateresque 1990s probe into Arkansas basketball (that, among other things has essentially led to the death of a once-proud program), but trouble is on the horizon for Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans.

An appellate court ruling yesterday in a lawsuit against former USC star Reggie Bush should pave the way for the depositions of Bush and Carroll. At that point, we might find out of Yahoo! Sports really did some of the best investigative sports journalism of the decade with its expose on USC a few years ago.

Even with all of these endorsements, Reggie Bush may have taken a pay cut when he went to the NFL.

This is just the latest in a long recent stretch of negative headlines for the Trojans, who appear to be experiencing a lot of  internal strife. (both are columns by the L.A. Times’ Bill Plaschke, but provide good background)

I look for Carroll to pull a John Calipari and get out of town while the gettin’ is still relatively good, and just before his program is hamstrung with the NCAA’s dreaded “lack of institutional control” label.

ESPN SEC Blogger Chris Low Thinks Arkansas

Posted by Adam Butler on December 29, 2009

"Guys, I am coming back and we are gonna roll it up in 2010".

may be pretty good next season. (scroll down to the last answer) If Arkansas can’t split the 3rd and 4th games of next season (@ GeorgiaSept. 18 then hosting Bama on September 25) then I think they will have a good chance at 10 wins (assuming Mallett returns).

Roger Ebert’s “Best Films of 2009″ List(s)

Posted by Adam Butler on December 29, 2009

is interesting because he broke it down into mainstream and indy films.  What do you people who don’t have 2-year old (or have family close by or a babysitter) and actually get to see movies think of the picks?  I am not suprised that “The Blind Side” missed the cut.  I haven’t seen it, but from what I have heard, it sounds like a movie critics would be above liking.

Pat Forde Calls Former/Current/Probably Future Florida Coach Urban Meyer

Posted by Adam Butler on December 28, 2009

*gasp* a flip-flopper.

It’s hard to argue with what he writes, regarding Tim Tebow’a most dearly beloved head coach, but considering the rip job he performed on Bobby Petrino when Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons to become the Razorbacks’ head coach, it’s hard to tell how much of this is valid opinion and how much of it is simply Forde’s modus operandi.  No word on whether the Gators have all changed their major to drama in honor of their former/current/probably future coach.

Hug Your Kids And Loved Ones

Posted by Adam Butler on December 25, 2009

a little bit tighter tonight and be thankful, no matter who you are or what you do or don’t have.  Stories like this one are unfathomable.  I have met the Wises, and they seem to be very nice, giving people.  This is terribly, terribly sad.

Pete Carroll is a Hypocrite’s Hypocrite IV

Posted by Adam Butler on December 23, 2009

OK, this is a few days old, but I had to post this article about the latest of many recent controversies at USC-W.  It details the hubbub involving an SUV that was purchased by a Santa Monica businessman and is being driven by the girlfriend of  Trojan Running back Joe McKnight.  The last few paragraphs were just too priceless.

Documents in the Los Angeles County Registrar’s office show that in May 2008, Schenter registered two companies, “Brighter” and “USC Marketing.” Schenter said in his e-mail that USC stood for United States China Marketing.

Other records show Brighter later registered for the website domain 4joemcknight.com and Schenter was listed as the administrative contact for that site and several other domains, including ojaymayo.com and uscmarketing.com. None of those sites are currently active.

“I only purchased www.4joemcknight.com (didn’t renew) because I thought it was clever along with the many other ones I own/owned,” Schenter said. “Michelle Beltran knew nothing of this website.” Schenter said his other domains include uscromeo.com, uclalove.com, 24kobe.com and airkobe.com.

Fired For (Not Really) Playing Fantasy Football at Work?

Posted by Adam Butler on December 18, 2009

I am my own boss now, but if my former employer had been as strict as Fidelity Investments, I would have been canned, quickly.

“One of my buddies sent me something about how bad Trent Edwards was playing or something like that,” Pettigrew said. “So they called me in and talked to me for about 90 minutes on everything I ever knew about fantasy football. They interrogated me as though I was some sort of international gambling kingpin. Then they released me for the day, and I was like, ‘OK.’ I never thought they’d fire me for this, but, the next day, I get the call saying I had been terminated.”

SEC Baseball Tourney to Experiment With

Posted by Adam Butler on December 18, 2009

a Pitch Clock.  Booooooo.  This is baseball.  It’s bad enough we have to suffer aluminum bats (albeit somewhat muted ones) in college baseball……now this?  I don’t like it.

Bowl Mania–Alright. Enough Already. Last Call.

Posted by Adam Butler on December 18, 2009

I can see the hits.  I know that a suprisingly decent number of people read the ramblings of 2 mad men on this site.  I also know that when we post college football related stuff, you guys eat it up like catfish.

Sooooooooooo.  Sign up for Bowl Mania.  We have to at least get 25-30 so that someone, theoretically, has a chance to beat me.  The winner gets an autographed picture of my eye brows.

What Timing

Posted by Brett Kincaid on December 16, 2009

Tiger Woods is your AP Athlete of the Decade.  Apparently more than half of the votes came in after Tiger’s pernsoal woes became public.  I’m not sure what — if anything — you can read from that.

I will say this:  I suspecgt he would have been in my top 2 or 3 if I had a ballot.  I very likely would have gone with Lance Armstrong as my top choice.
