That Didn’t Take Long

Posted by Brett Kincaid on November 25, 2009

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has reinstated freshman safety Janzen Jackson.  Jackson had been implicated in an armed robberty that resulted in 2 other Volunteer players being kicked off the team.  Now that Jackson has been cleared, he will start this weekend.

“As I’ve said before, we wanted to take our time. These were very serious allegations,” Kiffin said. “We wanted to make sure we handled this properly. After an extensive and thorough investigation by the Knoxville Police Department, they have cleared Janzen of any wrongdoing. He will join the team activities today.”

Jackson’s attorney is regarded as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Tennessee.  He is also a former UT swimmer and member of the athletics department board of advisors.  Can you say pro bono?

$5,000 Lottery Scholarships

Posted by Brett Kincaid on November 25, 2009

House Speaker Robbie Wills announced Tuesday that he expects scholarship levels to be set at $5,000 yearly for full-time students at 4-year schools.  Students attending 2-year schools will be eligible for $2,500 each year.  The state’s new lottery is expected to bring in more than $400 million this year.  Roughly 25% of total sales will be set aside for scholarships each year.

“I have yet to see anything from the Lottery Commission that would indicate to me that we could not do $5,000 scholarships for a four-year school or $2,500 dollars for a two-year school,” Wills, D-Conway, said during a hearing of the legislative lottery oversight committee.
