Curtis Vance Convicted on All Counts in Pressly Case

Posted by Adam Butler on November 11, 2009

No suprise, but here is the update from the good folks at the Arkansas Times.  Now, the real question–whether he gets the death penalty.  I predict the defense will convince one person to not give the death penalty.

My $.02 on (Most of) Closing Arguments in the Pressly Trial

Posted by Adam Butler on November 11, 2009

I will keep this brief, b/c I expect the jury to be back with a guilty verdict, soon.  That said, I thought Defense Attorney Teri Chambers was particularly effective (given what she has with which to work) today.  Her tone was appropriate, and she made hay at times in closing regarding the mostly circumstantial evidence in the case and the lack of ANY blood evidence from Vance’s car despite exhaustive efforts by the State to find some.

I am not going to Monday morning quarterback too much regarding Chief Deputy Prosector John Johnson, who is by all accounts a very  good attorney, has a ton of trial experience and from the portions of this trial I saw did a wonderful job.

But, I will say I was a bit suprised at the number of objections he made during Defense’s closing, especially as related to the Defense’s Shakespearian (as the Arkansas Times called it) treatment of the (now missing) single hair that prosecutors say matches Vance.  I just thought it gave apparent credence to an otherwise bogus, conspiratorial argument.

That said, I didn’t see Mr. Johnson’s rebuttal, and I still think the odds of a conviction today are 99%.  It’s that 1% that gives attorneys gray (or no) hair.

Pressly Case Goes to the Jury

Posted by Adam Butler on November 11, 2009

which is currently in deliberations. Here is an update from the good folks at the Arkansas Times.  Also, David Goins of the local Fox affiliate tweets that the jury has some questions for the Judge.  That has to make the State a little nervous.  I saw most of closing arguments, and will try to post my thoughts when I get a chance.

One thing I will say is that I am glad I didn’t blog (against the Judge’s Order) from the courtroom like a Memphis reporter, Jill Monier, did today.  Judge Piazza banned her from the courthouse and said he would have locked her up for contempt but most everyone (normally) there was off for the holiday.
