Select 17 — Week 6
Posted by Brett Kincaid on October 5, 2009
We learned a few things this past week in college football. Perhaps the biggest lesson came from, of course, the SEC. LSU is obviously a very sound football team after going to Georgia and pulling off the win. Many “experts”, myself included, did not expect the Tigers could handle the road against a thought-to-be improving Georgia team. They did, and they justified their lofty poll position.
We also learned that Auburn may be a degree or two better than we predicted. BlogHawgs.com expected Auburn to show well this season. And their 5-0 start is not something too unexpected. But they pushed Tennessee around and clamped down when they needed to do so. That was an impressive win. Pulling off back-to-back road wins for Auburn would launch them into my Top 10.
We learned that Oklahoma just does not have what it takes this year without Bradford, Alabama is as good as we thought, and USC looks to be putting it all together. So much for Cal overcoming their bridesmaid status in 2009. Here are your Week 6 rankings:
| 1 | Florida (5) |
| 2 | Alabama (2) |
| 3 | Texas |
| 4 | LSU |
| 5 | Virginia Tech |
| 6 | Boise St. |
| 7 | Cincinnati |
| 8 | USC |
| 9 | TCU |
| 10 | Miami |
| 11 | Ohio St. |
| 12 | Iowa |
| 13 | Oregon |
| 14 | Penn St. |
| 15 | Auburn |
| 16 | Kansas |
| 17 | Oklahoma St. |

I am sure Georgia Fans Will Take Great Solace

in the fact that they SEC supervisor of officials stated today that the ridiculously heavy-handed and unnecessary excessive celebration penalty on Georgia superstar WR A.J. Green at the end of the Bulldogs’ 20-13 loss to LSU in Athens Saturday was botched.
For those who missed it:
Here is a bit of context: Green, in the wake of his magnificent, go-ahead TD grab with 1:09 remaining in the game, was flagged for excessive celebration when he in fact did very little, if any, celebrating at all.
LSU then ralled to score the game-winning touchdown after the penalty and a 40-yard kickoff return by Tigers speedster Trindon Holliday.
The penalty was preposterous and probably altered the outcome of the game. I would love to see the SEC refs exercise a little common sense. It would go a lot farther than a pitiful little postgame pseudo apology.
