And Something to Bring us Back Down

Posted by Adam Butler on September 21, 2009

like ESPN’s Mark Sclabach’s ranking off the  most defenseless defenses in the country this week.  I have no problem with Cox being the #2 QB of the week, but Mallett can’t crack the top 5 with 400+ yards passing, 5 TDs and no INTs?  Maybe winning the game is a prerequisite to being listed.

Jerry Franklin, starting linebacker for the Arkansas Razorbacks and momentum killer du jour (with 2 personal fouls and an ejection when the Hogs were up 21-10 on Georgia and had just gotten the ball back on a turnover near midfield) will NOT be suspended for the Alabama game on Saturday.

Quick Thoughts on the Razorbacks’ Defense

Posted by Adam Butler on September 21, 2009

I am not suprised that they are not a good Defense.

But, I am suprised that, but for Junior College transfer cornerback Rudell Crim, the defensive newcomers in the secondary haven’t really helped, much.  Those newcomers are the reason I had some hope for a better defense coming into this season.

I thought the offense would be MUCH improved (and it is) and that the secondary would be improved with the addition of Crim, safety Anthony Leon, heralded cornerback recruit and West Helena native, Darius Winston, Tulsa speedster David Gordon and JUCO defensive back Andru Stewart.

So far, that group, for various reasons, hasn’t had much impact.

There still just isn’t a ton of talent, as a whole on the defense, and I don’t see a lot on the way.  The defensive line is average, at best.  I think Malcolm Sheppard is the only guy that would start for a top-level SEC D.

I keep hearing about how former Little Rock Catholic standout and Razorback legacy Jake Bequette has a lot of potential, but he hasn’t had much impact in the games.  Defensive end Adrian Davis has been around awhile and shown flashes during his career, but is undersized and gets man-handled a lot.  Zach Stadther plays hard but isn’t the huge bell cow you would love at the nose guard spot.

I think the most frustrating thing for me is that I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel for the defensive unit.  I am looking for something to believe in and just don’t see it, and haven’t for awhile.  Hopefully they will bounce back with a solid effort in Tuscaloosa.

Call it the Georgia Game Hangover

Posted by Adam Butler on September 21, 2009

(or, more correctly, that I had court this morning and BK is traveling to Boston). That is our excuse for no links this a.m.

We’ll have some stuff up as the day moves along.
