More on Georgia v. Arkansas from ESPN.com

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 17, 2009

Rece Davis highlights the Hogs v. Dogs as one of those “identity” games this week.  I think it’s pretty on target.  As much as we think we know, this Arkansas team has yet to reveal itself.  And Georgia is still trying to figure out if it is good enough to compete for the SEC East or just be happy to go bowling.

Arkansas has the toughest road schedule in the history of football. That might be a bit of hyperbole, but how would you like to stare at trips to Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and LSU? I thought all summer that the Hogs would steal at least one of those games. The potential springboard comes Saturday night at home against Georgia. We don’t know who the Razorbacks are yet, but we know who Bob Petrino is. The second-year theory for a coach applies here. With an elite-level coach, it all seems to click in the second year.

Remembering Hawg Ball Part 5

Posted by Adam Butler on September 17, 2009

I am particularly proud of this find.  It is vintage Hawg Ball, and is some rare video that captures the phenomenon that was Lenzie Howell.  Man, Lee Mayberry was so good.  I might be crying a little bit, here.

College Football News likes Georgia to beat the Hogs.

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 17, 2009

In their fearless predictions, the boys at CFN expect a shootout ending with a Georgia victory.

What will happen: Mallett will throw for well over 300 yards and Arkansas will move the ball at will, but four turnovers and a good day from the Georgia ground game (finally) with a good rotation of backs will make the difference.
CFN Prediction: Georgia 30 … Arkansas 27 … Line: Arkansas -1

Here are the rest of their SEC picks for this week, including a whitewashing in Gainesville.

(Even More) of What Others Are (Still) Saying

Posted by Adam Butler on September 17, 2009

One would think they would realize how boring, unimaginative and ill-informed these continuous rip jobs on Bobby Petrino have become.  From the latest drivel (ie a predictions column by Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution):

Bobby Petrino will reach a milestone Saturday. He is about to coach his 14th game with Arkansas. Souvenir brimstone to the first 10,000 fans. Fourteen games will exceed his longevity record with the Falcons, where, of course, he went 3-10, vowed to Arthur Blank he absolutely had everything under control, that magic elixir would cure anything, that car would run for decades, that gold was real — and, well, 24 hours later, it was pea soup everywhere. It seemed Petrino was called by a lower power to buy and sell souls at Arkansas. At midnight.

Arkansas fans believe Petrino is there to stay. The rest of the world is thinking: They can have him. He’s 9-17 as a head coach since he  stopped playing South Florida. I’m thinking the Beelzebub Gravy Train is pretty much at the end of the line. And over the cliff. As it is written.

This week, Georgia and Tech fans unite! The Bulldogs visit The Swine and its Flu. They haven’t been great, but they could sending a team of 5-foot-2 monks to Arkansas and I’d still know which way I was going. Take the gift point. But it’s Dogs over Oinks, straight up.

BlogHawgs.com Week 3 Picks

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 17, 2009

Adam jumped out to a good lead in Week 1 only to see me strike back last week.  This could be a close race all season.  We have several differences of opinion this week.  One thing where we agree is that Arkansas should defend the home turf this week.

Road Home Line Adam  Brett
Georgia Tech   Miami Miami -4 Ga Tech Ga Tech
BK Says:  If the Ga Tech team from last week’s first half shows up, Miami is in trouble.
If the 2nd half team from last week shows up, Tech is a wreck.  I’ll take the points.
Miami 31, Ga Tech 28

Boise St.  Fresno St. Boise St. -10 Fresno Boise
BK Says:  Pat Hill’s Bulldogs have not beaten a ranked opponent since 2004.  They make too many mistakes to be trusted in this game.
Boise St. 41, Fresno St. 21

Tennessee Florida Florida -27.5 Tennessee Florida
BK Says:  The FU factor makes me want to take UF.
Florida 48, Tennessee 10

Texas Tech Texas Texas -17 Tech Texas
BK Says:  Texas should roll, not because of revenge but because they are a much, much bette team than Tech this year.
Texas 56, Texas Tech 24

USC Washington USC -23 USC Washington
BK Says:  Too many intangibles stacking up against USC.  I’ll take U-Dub and the points.
USC 31, Washington 20

Florida St. BYU BYU -6 BYU BYU
BK Says:  The Cougars are on a mission.  Hahahaha….
BYU 48, Florida St. 28

California Minnesota Cal -14 California Minnesota
BK Says:  Cal has better athletes and should win.  This is the Gophers first big game at their new on-campus stadium.  Take the points
Cal 37, Minnesota 28

Tulsa Oklahoma Oklahoma -15.5 Oklahoma Oklahoma
BK Says:  It is very tempting to take Tulsa here, but OU has something to prove.
Oklahoma St. 59, Tulsa 30

Michigan St. Notre Dame Notre Dame -11.5 Michigan St. Michigan St.
BK Says: Sparty owns the Irish.  Both teams are reeling, and ND has more pressure on them by virtue of playing at home.
Michigan St. 28, Notre Dame 24

West Virginia Auburn Auburn -5.5 Auburn Auburn
BK Says:  Two teams going in different directions.  Auburn has a chance to really make a statement.
Auburn 49, West Virginia 17

Nebraska Virginia Tech Virginia Tech -3 Va Tech Nebraska
BK Says:  I’m banking on the Big XII being better than the ACC in this one.
Nebraska 20, Virginia Tech 17

Cincinnati Oregon St. Oregon St. -2 Oregon St. Cincinnati
BK Says:  It’s a tough roadie, but I like what I’ve seen from the Bearcats.
Cincinnati 27, Oregon St. 21

Utah Oregon Oregon -4 Oregon Utah
BK Says:  I’ll ride the Utes’ winning streak until it ends.  HUGE game for Oregon
Utah 31, Oregon 30

Louisville Kentucky Kentucky -10 Kentucky Kentucky
BK Says:  Rich Brooks believe he has a special team.  He might be right.
Kentucky 35, Louisville 20

Georgia Arkansas Georgia -1 Arkansas Arkansas
BK Says:  The Road Warriors showed signs of weakness in Stillwater.  Ryan Mallett’s coming out party
Arkansas 48, Georgia 30

Mississippi St. Vanderbilt Vanderbilt -8 MSU MSU
BK Says:  I think MSU may win this one straight up.  Vanderbilt is in trouble already on the injury front.
Mississippi St. 27, Vanderbilt 20

Adam:  14-11-1

Brett:  15-10-1

SEC Picks — ESPN Style

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 17, 2009

Chris Low, the prolific ESPN blogger covering the SEC, has his Week 3 picks up this morning.  He’s calling for a Razorback victory.

Arkansas 31, Georgia 24: This is a game the Hogs have been pointing to since the summer and a game that will shape their season one way or the other. Look for a lot of offense out of both teams, a big play or two on special teams and just enough defense by the Hogs to win a close one in the fourth quarter. Bobby Petrino didn’t have to show very much of his offensive package in the opener two weeks ago against Missouri State, but will pull out all the stops in this one.

We’ll have the BlogHawgs picks up later today.  Like real men, we pick ‘em against the spread.

SEC Links

Special teams problems appear to be common early in the SEC.  Auburn has issues, too.

Mississippi State will stick with its two quarterback system this week at Vandy.

The NFL’s Jaguars may draft future Pro Bowl H-Back Tim Tebow.  Really?  We’re discussing this already?
