NFL Week 1 Picks

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 11, 2009

I’m 1-0 on the season!  Honestly, I should consider not making any more of these picks.  Having a perfect season is the dream of every handicapper, pro or amateur.  I am decidedly an amateur at this, but a man can dream.  These lines are accurate as of Friday morning.  My picks are in ALL CAPS.

Miami at ATLANTA (-4)

I am a believer in Matt Ryan.  Both teams spiked last year with great seasons coming off nightmares in 2007.  Both have something to prove.  Going with the home team seems like the right move.

Kansas City at BALTIMORE (-13)

Until they prove us wrong, Kansas City is still an awful football team with a quarterback playing with a limp.  I’ll take Ray Lewis.

Philadelphia at CAROLINA (+2.5)

Carolina always wins a game like this.  And it wouldn’t be an Andy Reid team if Philly didn’t stumble early.

Denver at CINCINNATI (-4)

This is the only week I can imagine taking Cincinnati to cover anything.  Denver may not be a favorite in a single game until they play KC at home.

MINNESOTA (-4) at Cleveland

I am not buying the Vikings over the long haul, but I’ll take them this week.

NY Jets at HOUSTON (-4.5)

I like Rex Ryan and think the Jet defense will be very good.  I just cannot take a rookie QB on the road against a team that will win eleven games.

JACKSONVILLE (+7) at Indianapolis

The Jags were the most injured team in the NFL last season.  With a healthy offensive line and finally some dependable weapons on the edge, I like the Jags to attacked a Bob Sanders-less Colts defense.

Detroit at NEW ORLEANS (-13)

Tough call, but Drew Brees should light up the Lions defense.  I actually expect Stafford to handle himself well.

DALLAS (-6) at Tampa Bay

For some reason I really want to take Tampa.  But I just cannot wager on a team that fired its offensive coordinator 10 days before the first game of the season.

SAN FRANCISCO (+6.5) at Arizona

I also strongly urge a money line wager on the Niners to win.

Washington (+6.5) at NY GIANTS

The lack of proven playmakers for the G-men is concerning.  Brandon Jacobs is a beast, but he was made better by tremendous RB depth which they no longer have.  New York may pull this out, but I’ll definitely take the points with a solid Redskins team.

St. Louis at SEATTLE (-8.5)

A tantalizing teaser team this week, Seattle should roll the Lambs.

Chicago at GREEN BAY (-3.5)

Perhaps the second half of that tease.  Aaron Rodgers is about to make the leap.

Buffalo at NEW ENGLAND (-11)

I hate laying this many points, but I have no faith in the Bills right now.

San Diego at OAKLAND (+9.5)

If you get more than a touchdown at home on Monday night, take it.

Searcy High School’s football stadium is a potential death trap, forcing the team to find a new temporary home.

Pittsburgh survived a stiff test against Tennessee last night, winning in overtime.  They did lose all-everything safety Troy Polamalu for at least 3 weeks to a knee injury.

Georgia Tech jumped to a huge lead then needed a late field goal to hold off Clemson in a very entertaining ACC matchup last night.

Turns out the NY Jets failed to report Brett Favre’s biceps injury last year on any pre-game reports.

John Lackey tossed a gem last night, shutting out the Seattle Mariners.

SEC Links

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 11, 2009

Ron Higgins over at the Memphis Commercial-Appeal has his SEC Power Rankings.

5. Arkansas (No. 6, 1-0) —Not so bold prediction here. The Hoggies will lead the SEC in passing this year.

Next game: Sept. 19 vs. Georgia, 6:45 p.m.

The Arkansas special teams need some work, but the kickoff return unit is in strong shape thanks to Dennis Johnson.

My guess is he comes back, but redshirting London Crawford is not out of the question.

Alabama’s Mark Ingram was back at practice yesterday and should play against Florida International.

Linebacker Eltoro Freeman is still questionable for Auburn in tomorrow’s game against Mississippi State.

Internet and talk radio rumors led Georgia Coach Mark Richt to announce yesterday that Joe Cox will indeed remain his starter at quarterback.

Former Bengals and Bucs coach Sam Wyche may have saved Jonathan Crompton’s career.

Thirty of Mississippi’s 105 eligible practice players did not participate in Thursday drills because of the flu.  That number surely would have been lower if the Rebels had an opponent this week.

Mississippi State hopes TE Marcus Green continues to grow into the hybrid position in Dan Mullen’s offense.

It’s cute how Florida acts like preparing for Troy is the most important week of the season.

Jordan Jefferson will make his first start at LSU’s Tiger Stadium tomorrow night against Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt will arrive early in Baton Rouge today prior to tomorrow’s evening kickoff.
