Schilling for Senate?

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 2, 2009

I certainly hope not.  If nothing else, Schill is not ready for primtime based on this comment:

“My hope is that we’re past that,” Schilling told NECN. “That we’re past the whole R and D thing. My fear is that we aren’t. My hope is that we understand now more than ever that we’re in a place where we need to put good people, above all else. People without ties to special interests, people with integrity and ethics and country first values in office regardless of the letter that precedes their name.”

Bringing a World Championship to a fanbase in the fashion he did will forever endear Schilling to Red Sox Nation — as a baseball player.  I am a Red Sox fan and was elated after 2004.  I also felt like I had been stabbed in the back by Schilling when he appeared on the “Today” show and told people to “Vote Bush” just before the election.

No matter how fondly I look back to that run in 2004 and his performance in Game 6 of the ALCS, I’ll never be able to embrace him.  I certainly hope the people of Massachusetts show him that fandom does not extend to the voting booth all the time.

Bad Punch, Good Punch–Todd Day delivered his fair share of (figurative) haymakers on the hardwood–just not against GrandMama.

ESPN’s Schlabach Ranks Hogs’ Schedule

Posted by Adam Butler on September 2, 2009

5th toughest in the country.

In terms of talent and skill, the Razorbacks might be one of the country’s most improved teams in coach Bobby Petrino’s second season at the school. But the Hogs might struggle to make much of an improvement on last season’s 5-7 record because they play one of the country’s most difficult schedules.

Passive-Aggressive Irish

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 2, 2009

Some Notre Dame faithful have established a not-so-subtle reminder to Charlie Weis about his lackluster efforts in South Bend.

It reads: “Best wishes to Charlie Weis in the fifth year of his college coaching internship.” Weis said Tuesday he had not yet seen the billboard, about a half mile from his office, but had been told about it.

I am a little disappointed that Arkansas fans were not this clever during the Nutt-Bragg-Mustain Saga.  The flying banners were inventive but temporary.  These fans at ND plan to leave up their message for a while.

This does not appear to be a joke.

When Adam sent me this link, I honestly thought it was from The Onion or something like that.  Unfortunately, it looks to be true.

Nolan Richardson met with WNBA investor David Box at the BOK Center on Monday to discuss the former University of Tulsa coach’s interest in leading the professional women’s basketball team that investors hope to bring to Tulsa next season.

The Dash is back!

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 2, 2009

BlogHawg favorite Pat Forde is back for another season of the Forde Yard Dash.  This is a must-read each week for college football fans.  For my money, Forde is probably the most entertaining college football writer out there right now.

So many storylines, so much potential for mayhem. It seems like we’re on the brink of an epic year.

This feels like the rooftop scene in “The Hangover,” minus the lone wolf speech. We’re about to toast ourselves with Jagermeister and begin an adventure that hopefully does not end with missing teeth, a stolen squad car or a tiger in the bathroom. Well, maybe Mike the Tiger (2) in Stanford’s new $50,000 to $70,000 bathroom for Jim Harbaugh (3). That would be cool.

It was another great night for high school football action.  Watson Chapel may be for real this year.  Michael Dyer and his LR Christian team stopped Pulaski Oak Grove.

The Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff Week continued last night in Van Buren with a couple of blowouts.

It has been a really bad week for Michigan’s Rich Rodriguez.

Even Beanie Wells thinks this is funny.  Bengals rookie Andre Smith broke a bone in his foot two days after ending his 32-day holdout and signing a contract with $21 million guaranteed.

The Cardinals locked up 2 key bullpen members yesterday before they went out and knocked off Milwaukee.

Boston knocked off Tampa last night, but Texas still gained ground thanks to a double-header sweep.

No major upsets at the U.S. Open yesterday, although #11 seed Ana Ivanovic fell in a great match to Ukranian Kateryna Bondarenko.  Rafael Nadal takes the court today and claims to be healthy.

SEC Links

Not even Michael Smith knows how many touches he’ll see in the Razorbacks opener this weekend.

Arkansas players and coaches (and fans) do not expect to see a repeat of last year’s season opener.

Hawgs Illustrated’s Dudley Dawson saw Michael Dyer last night and believes Dyer is worth the hype.  Speaking of Dyer, he did not commit to Auburn last night — but did say AU was his clear leader.  And Florida prep QB Clint Trickett will announce his college decision soon.

What if Rich Rodriguez had not turned down Alabama back in 2006?

Auburn plans to start a freshman at safety this week.

Georgia has got to be feeling good about Saturday given all the distractions Okie State has dealt with this week.

Jerrell Powe made a commitment to himself and his teammates this offseason.  Now he hopes it all pays off on the field.

Still no word from Mississippi State about the status of star running back Anthony Dixon, who was arrested this off-season on DUI charges.

Tennessee’s Eric Berry is healthy and eager to play that way this season.

I’ll believe it when I see it, Coach Spurrier.

Les Miles officially named Jordan Jefferson his starter at quarterback for this week’s game at Washington.

Florida does have a weakness.  They are short-handed at the wide receiver position.

Winning has brought more than respect to Vanderbilt.

In a state full of huge egos (and bad boys), Kentucky’s Rich Brooks stands above it all.

Morning News

Posted by Brett Kincaid on September 2, 2009

As we mentioned yesterday, state Sen. Gilbert Baker (R – Conway) announced he will run for the U.S. Senate.  There are five other announced Republican candidates and at least one other still considering a run.  Sen. Lincoln is running for her third term.

The Arkansas House of Representatives has hired a new PR firm while terminating the employment of the full-time information director.

Sen. Lincoln will hold her first town hall meeting of this recess today in Russellville.  Yup…health care is on the agenda.

The NW Arkansas United Way fall fundraising campaign kicked off yesterday.  Organizers hope to exceed last year’s goal, which topped $4 million.

If this guy is guilty, I hope someone takes care of him at Cummins.

Once again, I support “The Man” in this instance.  I really am getting more conservative as I get older.

I wonder what Reggie Herring thinks of the NLR Fire Department.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta offers a parent’s guide to the H1N1 virus.

If you had plans to visit Cabo this weekend, you may want to change them.

At least one Republican Senator believes a “minor revolution” may be upon us.

We are at war in Afghanistan.  I mention that just because it seems like everyone has forgotten about it.
