Former Springdale Bulldog Mitch Mustain Officially Toast at USC

Posted by Adam Butler on August 27, 2009

It’s not just that TRUE FRESHMAN Matt Barkley has been named the starter, or that Mitchell is the 3rd-stringer–(even though he is the most experienced) it’s that he didn’t even get mentioned in the L.A. Times article about the decision until the LAST paragraph.  Boy, what a doozy it was:

Mitch Mustain, the former Arkansas starter who is third on the depth chart at quarterback, did not attend practice, saying in an e-mail that he had flu.

Hope it’s not the swine flu.

He may just be sick from having to gorge himself with lots of humble pie.

    Unreal.

The question I’d like to discuss is… Would he be the starter at Arkansas right now with Mallett on campus? (Even assuming he had not transferred and therefore had played under Petrino for one year.)

Seems like there was always a question of arm strength with Mitch. He’s not the biggest guy in the world. I suspect Mallett would still get the nod if they were in a head-to-head competition.

Not that Mallett is any scientific rocket, but I always MM was a lightweight between the ears.

I think Mustain would be third string at Arkansas. I really do. Mustain has obviously not impressed at USC, as they are starting a true freshman for the first time in school history, and the 2nd string guy, with less experience, has a broken bone in his leg. Mustain also hasn’t been stellar when he actually has played in games.

Meanwhile, Mallett has been drawing rave reviews in the offseason from people who are not normally in the business of handing them out, and Wilson is pushing him for playing time.

While I would agree that Mallett’s off-field decision-making (arrest, Eminemish vibe) suggests he may not be the brightest bulb, his teammates and coaches say he is a very good student of the game (gets them out of bad plays and into good ones) and has been since high school.

Tough question, Jeff. I would say yes. Mustain would be a three year senior starter (barring an injury or some Gary Brashears type meltdown). Mustain was a good (not great) starter as a true freshman. He would have only gotten better with snaps. Who was going to beat him out over the past two years? A Dick?
