She’s a Man, Baby??

Posted by Adam Butler on August 19, 2009

That’s the question being asked at the World Track and Field Championships about new 800 meter champion Caster Semenya of South Africa.  No formal inquiry has been made into the gender identity of American tennis star Serena Williams.

John Smoltz is a Cardinal

Posted by Adam Butler on August 19, 2009

I thought it was over for him, but maybe he can squeeze a little bit more production into a remarkable career.  My Cardinals badly need a right-handed setup man. It will be sweet if they can fill the role with a HOFer. It also can’t hurt the other pitchers on staff to be learning from 2 pros like Chris Carpenter and Smoltz.

As we mentioned yesterday, the LR Junior Deputy All-Stars won a thriller at the Cal Ripken World Series.  They play again today with hopes of advancing out of pool play with a win over New England.   Unfortunately they’ll need a little help along the way, too.

Brett Favre is back.  Yawn….

St. Louis appears to be the next stop for John Smoltz.  The right-hander was formally released from Boston on Monday.

Now that Stephen Strasburg is under contract, people want to see him pitch in Washington.  “Not likely,” says GM Mike Rizzo.

Brandon Marshall really needs to shut up and play.

SEC Links

Razorback coaches now have a better idea who is going to help this team in 2009.

When Ben Cleveland arrived on campus for the 2006 season, people wondered how soon he would see the field.  Now people wonder if he can stay on it.

Alabama is looking for a compliment to All-SEC wide receiver Julio Jones.

Gus Malzahn need not worry about Gene Chizik looking over his shoulder.

Georgia has hit the injury wall with several players sitting because of hamstring injuries.

Bradley Sowell has big shoes to fill – literally — on the Mississippi offensive line.

Tennessee’s Bryce Brown’s eligibility is in jeopardy thanks to his high school “advisor”.

Mississippi State’s playbook is a bit smaller, but that could be a good thing.

The Kentucky depth chart is starting to take shape.

Florida continues to prepare for their title defense.

Two former Tennessee commits finally get to play for John Chavis … at LSU.

South Carolina got some bad news from the NCAA Clearinghouse yesterday.

Morning News

Posted by Brett Kincaid on August 19, 2009

Today is the first day of school for Arkansas public school students.  Watch yourself driving through school zones, folks.  Let’s try to not run anyone over.

Congressman Vic Snyder hosted a town hall yesterday that left no one bloody or on YouTube.  As usual, nothing was really accomplished.  I’m beginnig to think these are about as helpful as drive-time sports talk radio.

Dr. Randeep Mann was in court yesterday where he entered a not guilty plea to massive weapons charges.  He remains the #1 suspect in this summer’s car bombing in West Memphis.  I know West Memphis is not exactly Shagnri La, but it’s not Fallujah either.  I never expected to see IEDs in Arkansas.

Arkansas ACT scores are just as mediocre as last year.

They have been trying to build this road for 10 years (at least).  As long as I can remember a toll road has been critical to the proposal.

I’m not sure what is more surprising:  1) The average Arkansan has 16 prescriptions, or 2) That only ranks FIFTH nationally.  We don’t need health care reform.  We need prescription drug reform.  Sweet Jesus…

Forget what I said yesterday about Hurricane Bill.  We’re now looking at a Cat 4 storm that is bearing down on Bermuda.

Congressman Barney Frank hosted a real town hall meeting last night.  The British House of Commons is less raucus.
