Is Rick Pitino running for office as a Republican and I just missed it?

Posted by Brett Kincaid on August 11, 2009

I mean, you just KNEW this was coming.  Rick Pitino not only loves race horses, but he also loves to breed like one.  Unlike Secretariat, though, he prefers to nip it in the bud when he shoots and scores.  My absolute favorite quote from this article:

In addition, Cunagin Sypher did not disclose that there was a witness to the event at the restaurant, Vinnie Tatum, an executive assistant to Pitino. According to Abbott’s report, Tatum said he didn’t see what happened but heard “only the sounds of two people that seemed to be enjoying themselves during a sexual encounter.”

Well at least they were enjoying themselves!  Hey Rick, you know who else isn’t walking through that door?  Your future son or daughter!

One has to wonder if this actually gives him more cred with his players.  Although I bet it’s going to be very uncomfortable when he walks into a living room with some 17-year-old’s momma in there.  He’ll have lots of explaining to do.

has been named to the 2009 preseason Outland Trophy Watch list.  The Outland Trophy is awarded to the nation’s top college player at the tackle, guard or center position.

He joins teammates Ryan Mallett, QB (O’Brien Award), D.J. Williams, TE (Mackey Award) and Michael Smith (Doak Walker Award) on preseason watch lists for awards given to the most outstanding player at their respective positions.

“Truly Scary”

Posted by Adam Butler on August 11, 2009

those are the words President Obama used today (at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire) to describe a failure to reform health care.  He called certain accusations from his detractors “wild misrepresentations” (but did not mention ocassional bloghawgs commenter “Roger Black” by name.)  From the cnn.com article:

In particular, Obama rejected rumors that a health care bill passed by a House committee included setting up “death panels” to decide whether senior citizens get treatment. He called spreading such rumors a longstanding practice by opponents of health care reform, such as “those who profit under the status quo.”"What is truly scary, what is truly risky, is to do nothing,” Obama said, noting that premiums paid for health care coverage were rising three times faster than wages and that the government-run Medicare program for senior citizens would run out of money within a decade.

In a new twist at such forums, Obama specifically asked for questions from opponents of health care legislation to address issues of concern.

He repeated guarantees that a health care overhaul won’t force anyone to give up health insurance they like and won’t cut Medicare benefits, and he stood by his election pledge that he won’t raise taxes on people making less than $250,000 a year.

At the same time, Obama defended his call for a government-funded public health insurance option to compete against private insurers. He said such an option would hold down rates, rejecting accusations that it amounted to a government takeover of health care because private companies can’t compete with a government-funded plan.

“UPS and FedEx are doing just fine,” Obama said, referring to private courier services that compete with the U.S. Postal Service. “It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.”

ESPN is a Bunch of Copycats

Posted by Adam Butler on August 11, 2009

We recently dropped our bowl projections, and now, all of a sudden, they have weighed in.

Here are Mark Sclabach and Bruce Feldman’s projections, while ESPN SEC blogger Chris Low seems to have a slightly higher opinion of the Hogs’ chances.  From Low’s blog:

ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS

Bowl bound: Count on it

Best case: The Hogs take off in Year No. 2 under Bobby Petrino and land in the AT&T Cotton Bowl, playing their second game of the season in the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium. They also face Texas A&M earlier in the season in Jerry Jones’ new digs.

Worst case: The defense doesn’t make enough improvement, and a brutal road schedule takes its toll on the Hogs, sending them to the Advocare Independence Bowl.

Prediction: Chick-fil-A Bowl.

A Trivia Question Led Me to This

Posted by Adam Butler on August 11, 2009

NPR examination  in 2008 of one of the words you can’t say on television.  So, people have been saying that word since the 15th century? Amazing.

BTW–the trivia question was about a Groucho Marx quote that was a bit too crass for this space.
